Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's return to Britain has already drawn intense scrutiny, and now reports of a leaked phone number have added to the conversation. According to The Sun, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex's phone number was leaked while joining a WhatsApp group for parents at her and Prince Harry's children's school.

In the screenshot that the newspaper acquired and shared, it seemed like Meghan was added to a group chat for son Archie's class. 'Hi moms! Thanks for the warm welcome. So happy to be a part of this community xx,' read Meghan's supposed message.

Security Concerns and School Withdrawal

The Sussexes later withdrew Archie, 7, and Lilibet, 5, from the school. While reports indicate the decision was not directly linked to the leak, the episode nevertheless sparked a frenzy on social media.

One social media user pointed out that the family lived in Montecito for six years and the children also went to school in the area, but there were no widely reported incidents of information about the Sussexes being leaked.

'It's interesting that in the time they lived in the US, no parent ever leaked their number to the press. But not in the UK. Meghan joined a parents' WhatsApp group, like all parents do. She was humble & grateful to be part of community! & that vile mother sold her # to a tabloid,' one social media user tweeted.

Divided Reactions Online

On Threads, author Annika Sharma said: 'The comments around Meghan Markle's number being leaked are so polarized and weird. The American responses I've seen largely stick to a mom code where privacy should have been expected, while Brits seem to want her to be put in her place... and blaming her for it?'

'Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, for years in California, did school drop-offs and probably was part of mom groups at their school and yet there was not one leak or picture?' one asked.

Another user posted in disbelief: 'She was trying to be a good parent and you outed her personal number, AND BRITS ARE BLAMING MEGHAN?'

'Violation of Privacy'

On Reddit, some users stressed that the issue should be viewed through the lens of privacy rather than personal opinion. One Reddit user pointed out: 'I do think too many are downplaying that this IS a violation of her privacy even if the Mail blanked out her phone number in those screenshots.'

But the same Redditor mentioned that Prince Harry and Meghan should have anticipated such risks. 'The average person might not care about them like that but obviously people in the circles they want to be part of would, and clearly at least a handful of them are gonna relish on making their social life difficult to whatever petty degree there is. They're just not very smart people, especially Harry.'

In the same Reddit comment thread, another pointed out that there was no issue when they were in America.

The Sussex children have since been enrolled in another school. A spokesperson clarified that the withdrawal was a logistical decision related to the family's security arrangements. Meanwhile, the UK government is currently reviewing whether the family merits security detail following their return to Britain.
