The ballroom world is mourning as new details emerge regarding the final days of beloved dancer Robin Windsor.

Following a formal inquest, heartbreaking evidence has come to light suggesting the star felt deeply cast aside after his departure from the limelight. His story serves as a poignant reminder of the hidden emotional toll that often follows a high-profile career transition.

Before his life ended at 44 in 2024, Robin Windsor wrote of how being cast aside by the BBC 'destroyed me'. The former Strictly star explained that this experience 'started me on the road I'm still on' in a touching final letter.

A 'Lonely Space' Behind the Scenes

The depth of Windsor's resentment toward the BBC for his 2015 exit was uncovered in two letters found at the scene, according to evidence given at the inquest. In an emotional testimony, his dance partner, Kristina Rihanoff, wept as she recounted that a back injury caused the star to change 'significantly.' She further took aim at the programme, labelling it a 'very lonely space' where contestants and pros found 'not much support.'

Between 2010 and 2013, the 44-year-old was a fixture on the dance floor with celebrity partners including Patsy Kensit and Deborah Meaden. However, the inquest heard that he was eventually found deceased in his hotel room; a member of the front desk staff found him after he failed to vacate his room as scheduled, according to The Sun.

Despite the arrival of police and paramedics, the 44-year-old passed away at the Hoxton hotel in West London on 19 February 2024. A subsequent post-mortem examination indicated that his death was likely caused by a drug and alcohol overdose. During the investigation at the scene, PC Emily Hampson discovered two handwritten notes left near the dancer.

The first letter, intended for a friend, traced his struggles back to his departure from the show: 'This all really started when I lost my job on Strictly and have been fighting it ever since.' Windsor expressed how deeply the production's actions affected him, writing, 'The way they treated me destroyed me...It started me on the road I'm still on.'

The Final Curtain Call

Admitting that life had 'all gotten too much,' he spoke candidly about his 'heartache, the loneliness, the constant sadness.'

'All I wanted from life was to be happy. I loved my job more than anyone else.' The dancer said, 'I just live permanently in a dark place. I just can't live like this anymore. It's just too painful.'

'I had a good run, I've done some incredible things in my 44 years and had an unreal life doing what I loved, but all things must come to an end, and my curtain has come down for the final time.'

A Turning Point in 2013

Windsor also left a note for his ex, Ollie Augustin, specifically to absolve him of any guilt by stating: 'I need you to understand that this is not your fault!' These details emerged as the hearing at West London Coroner's Court continued on Monday. The proceedings highlighted a turning point in 2013 when a spinal injury required the removal of a disc; the subsequent recovery period meant he was unable to participate in the 2014 series of the competition.

The following season, television executives decided to end his contract. His close friend, 48-year-old Kristina Rihanoff, informed the court that she was 'extremely upset' to find that Windsor had been excluded from the show's thirteenth season. She explained that 'the psychological impact was very severe', as his ongoing back struggles had effectively stripped him of his ability to 'do what he loved.'

Contrasting Accounts of Dismissal

Rihanoff shared her heartache at seeing the dancer become 'deeply sad, subdued and burdened' during this period. However, former executive producer Louise Rainbow explained that the decision to release Robin and two other performers before the 2015 season was part of a creative 'refresh.'

Recalling the moment she delivered the news, Ms Rainbow noted he was 'very disappointed', yet she felt his reaction was 'understandably upset' and typical of any professional in that position.

While she saw no cause for alarm at the time, offering him roles on the Christmas special and It Takes Two—which he took—she maintained there was no mention of his mental health during their follow-up meetings. She remembered him fondly as a 'lovely man' and a 'joy to work with.'

'Broken Spirit' and Lasting Decline

Conversely, his former partner, Marcus Collins, provided a much bleaker account. In a statement read by Dr Anton van Dellen, the singer described Windsor as 'inconsolable' after receiving the call while they were holidaying in New York, marking a sharp decline in his well-being.

Collins further noted that 'the day he was informed he was no longer required really broke his spirit.' This sentiment was echoed by the dancer's aunt, Alison Windsor, who described her nephew as 'absolutely devastated' by the rejection.

Speaking on Monday, she explained that dancing was more than a career; it was his 'vocation' and something he 'lived, breathed, and slept'. She told the court that while joining the show was a 'dream' for any professional, his exit—triggered by spinal issues—marked a definitive turning point. She stated her firm belief that this specific loss was 'the start of Robin's decline.'

Lifelong Struggles and Personal Loss

In a written statement, Dragons' Den star Deborah Meaden recounted her awareness of the 2013 back injury that had hindered Windsor's ability to train. The jury heard that during a dinner meeting a year before his passing, the two had discussed his well-being. Deborah noted: 'We talked about his mental health problems, but he had come through the bad times and had plans for the future.'

Despite this optimistic outlook, the court was told that Robin's struggles with his mental health dated back to his childhood.

The inquest also turned to his personal life, hearing that he was finding it difficult to manage his separation from Starlight Express performer Ollie Augustin. Following their agreement to end contact that January, Ollie testified that Robin had been placed on suicide watch by his pantomime company over the 2023 Christmas period. Ollie shared the gravity of the situation, stating: 'He'd say things like he would kill himself if he couldn't be with me and there's no point in living.'

However, within the final message intended for Ollie, Windsor was careful to reassure him, stressing that he was not to blame for the tragedy. With these deeply personal details now on the record, the inquest is set to continue as the court further examines the circumstances surrounding his death.
