Rui Pinto
An unverified X post claims Football Leaks whistleblower Rui Pinto escaped an assassination attempt AFP News

Rui Pinto, the whistleblower whose Football Leaks material helped trigger investigations into Manchester City, is at the centre of an extraordinary online claim that he recently survived an assassination attempt.

A post circulating on X alleges Pinto escaped an ambush unharmed in a bulletproof SUV. No police statement or other authoritative confirmation of that alleged incident has emerged.

What is documented is that Pinto was physically assaulted in Lisbon earlier this year while still enrolled in Portugal's protected-witness programme, adding another dimension to questions surrounding his security.

Pinto Was Assaulted While Under Protection

Pinto's protected arrangements date back to August 2020, when he left pre-trial detention and agreed to cooperate with Portuguese authorities on material obtained through Football Leaks.

Despite those security measures, Pinto was physically assaulted in Lisbon in April 2026.

Current coverage of his security arrangements confirms the assault occurred while he remained under protection. No established connection has been made between that incident and Manchester City or Football Leaks.

The newer viral claim describes a considerably more serious incident, alleging Pinto was deliberately ambushed and escaped because he was travelling in a bulletproof vehicle.

Why Pinto Is Linked to Manchester City

Pinto became one of football's most controversial whistleblowers after obtaining millions of confidential documents and publishing material through Football Leaks. His cache included internal Manchester City emails and documents concerning the club's finances and commercial arrangements.

Information originating from the leaks contributed to separate investigations by UEFA and the Premier League. Manchester City have consistently disputed allegations of financial wrongdoing and previously succeeded in overturning a UEFA Champions League ban at the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

The Manchester City case came to attention in September. On 29 September, the Premier League announced that an independent commission had found City guilty of all charges relating to serious financial-rule breaches over a nine-season period and most charges concerning failure to cooperate.

Manchester City dispute the findings. Pinto described the outcome as a 'historic decision for English football'.

Witness Protection Is Now Ending

The timing of the latest speculation is particularly notable because Portuguese authorities have decided Pinto will leave the country's special witness-protection programme. His protected status is scheduled to end on 10 October following a reassessment of the risks surrounding him. Portugal's Commission for Special Security Programmes reportedly approved the decision unanimously after intelligence services reassessed his threat level.

Among the measures ending is Pinto's accommodation at a secret state-provided residence. Whether separate police protection continues is a different question and may depend on a judicial decision. Authorities reportedly assessed the current risk to Pinto's safety as low despite the April assault.

That creates an unusual sequence around one of football's best-known whistleblowers. Pinto was assaulted while under witness protection; authorities subsequently reassessed the threat surrounding him, and his protected status is approaching its end as a far more dramatic claim about his safety circulates online.

The documented April assault gives the latest story genuine context without proving the alleged ambush happened. Until that newer incident is corroborated by authorities or other reliable evidence, the assassination-attempt story remains an allegation rather than an established event.
