Russell Brand's wife, Laura Gallacher, accompanied the comedian to a London court on Monday, 12 October, as his trial began over allegations of rape and sexual assault involving six women. The 51-year-old former television presenter faces seven criminal charges relating to alleged offences spanning a decade. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Gallacher remained close to Brand as they arrived at Southwark Crown Court, where Brand was surrounded by security personnel and confronted by waiting photographers. The couple travelled in a black Mercedes, with Brand wearing a grey suit, an open-collared white shirt, and a brown handkerchief. He avoided questions from reporters before entering the building and was later photographed leaving the courthouse holding his wife's hand.

Gallacher also accompanied Brand to court proceedings on 6 October, wearing a yellow suit. Brand was accompanied by a member of his entourage who was seen carrying a Bible. The comedian spoke little during the appearance but briefly acknowledged a supporter as he left.

Brand and Gallacher have three children. The comedian has increasingly focused on online commentary after building a career in British television, radio and film. Gallacher's attendance at both court appearances comes as Brand continues to deny the allegations against him.

Disturbing Allegations Against Six Women

Brand has entered not guilty pleas to three rape charges, three sexual assault charges, and one indecent assault charge. Prosecutors allege that the offences occurred between 1999 and 2009, a period during which he was establishing himself as a prominent figure in British television, radio, and comedy.

Among the accusations previously outlined in court is an allegation that Brand raped a woman inside a hotel room during a Labour Party conference in Bournemouth. Another complainant alleges that he sexually assaulted her after forcing her into a lavatory while she was working in television. A separate allegation concerns a radio employee who claims Brand kissed and touched her sexually without consent. Brand disputes the accusations.

The criminal proceedings followed an investigation launched by London's Metropolitan Police in September 2023 after allegations against Brand were published by British newspapers and examined in a Channel 4 documentary. Authorities initially charged him in April 2025 over allegations involving four women, before additional charges relating to two other complainants emerged in January 2026.

Judge Warns Jurors Against Outside Information

Monday's proceedings focused on selecting jurors, with Mr Justice Bennathan questioning prospective panel members about their familiarity with previous reporting on Brand. Six potential jurors were dismissed after indicating they saw or read coverage of the allegations published or broadcast in 2023.

The judge also instructed prospective jurors not to conduct independent research into the allegations. Jury selection was expected to continue on Tuesday, 13 October, with prosecutors scheduled to begin presenting their arguments on Wednesday. Although earlier estimates suggested proceedings could take up to 10 weeks, jurors were told to anticipate approximately six weeks.

Brand rose to prominence through British comedy programmes before securing Hollywood roles in films including Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Get Him to the Greek and Arthur. Previously married to singer Katy Perry, he subsequently shifted his attention towards online commentary, spirituality and alternative wellness content.
