Putin-Linked Russian Oligarch Covered Six-Figure Costs for Donald Trump Jr.'s Luxury Island Wedding

A Russian oligarch with close ties to Vladimir Putin secretly covered hundreds of thousands of dollars in expenses for Donald Trump Jr.'s lavish Bahamas wedding, according to ProPublica.

Umar Kremlev, president of the International Boxing Association, paid to rent one of the private islands used during Trump Jr.'s three-day wedding celebration with Bettina Anderson in May, ProPublica said, adding that he also covered other major expenses, including a spectacular fireworks display, while members of his team helped organise the event

ProPublica reported the payments came through IB Challenger, a Dubai-based entity affiliated with the IBA and used by the boxing organisation for financial transactions.

Kremlev's office said the IBA itself did not incur wedding expenses but did not comment on payments from the Dubai entity.

Trump Jr.'s spokesperson did not dispute that Kremlev paid wedding expenses, telling the outlet: 'Umar is a personal friend of Don.'

Private Island and $70,000 Fireworks Show

The wedding unfolded across two exclusive Bahamian islands, with around 50 guests attending the wider festivities. Trump Jr. and Anderson exchanged vows during a smaller ceremony attended by just 18 people before celebrating over several days with family, friends and business associates.

The couple's first dance took place on a second private island that can reportedly cost around $100,000 a night to rent. Kremlev paid for that location, according to ProPublica.

The company responsible for the wedding's fireworks display normally charges around $70,000 for comparable shows. Guests arrived by helicopter and seaplane, while a five-tier cake was flown in from Florida.

Kremlev attended the wider wedding festivities alongside several other Russian guests, though Trump Jr.'s representative said he was not present at the actual marriage ceremony.

Kremlev's Putin Connections Raise Questions

The payments have attracted particular scrutiny because of Kremlev's connections to the Russian establishment.

Putin awarded Kremlev Russia's Order of Friendship in April. Days before Trump Jr.'s wedding, he was also in China while Putin was visiting, although Kremlev's representatives said he was not part of the president's 'official delegation'.

Kremlev has headed the IBA since 2020. The organisation previously received tens of millions of dollars from Gazprom, Russia's state-controlled energy giant.

The International Olympic Committee withdrew recognition from the IBA in 2023 following longstanding governance and financial concerns, including questions about its dependence on a state-owned sponsor.

Ukraine has imposed personal sanctions on Kremlev, citing his alleged ties to Putin and Russian security services. He is not currently listed under US sanctions.

Trump Jr. Says Relationship Is Personal

Neither side has publicly explained why Kremlev agreed to cover such substantial wedding expenses. Trump Jr.'s spokesperson said the pair met through a mutual friend in hunting circles and bonded over boxing and outdoor pursuits. He stressed that Trump Jr. has no business relationship with Kremlev.

Kremlev's office likewise described the two men as friends and said they had known each other for 'a couple of years'. It also said Kremlev had never discussed politics with Trump Jr.

National security specialists nevertheless raised concerns about such substantial gifts to the US president's son. Former US counterintelligence official Holden Triplett told ProPublica that financial relationships have historically offered intelligence services a route to influential people.

'Money is a tried-and-true method to gain access,' he said. The revelation is especially notable because Trump Jr. has become an influential figure in his father's political circle, playing an active role in vetting Cabinet picks for Trump's second administration.

What Kremlev hoped to gain, if anything, remains unknown. But the previously undisclosed payments reveal that behind Trump Jr.'s intimate island wedding was a powerful Russian figure willing to spend six figures helping make it happen.
