Samsung's high-end Galaxy S5 has been given the 'Plus' treatment with a chipset upgraded to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 which boasts with a Quad-core Krait 450 CPU - a slight leg up on the regular S5's Snapdragon 802 chipset. The Galaxy S5 Plus clocks its CPU at 2.5GHz.

Another speed improvement comes in the form of LTE-Advanced (aka 4G+) support on the S5 Plus, which technically can achieve mobile data speeds up to 300Mbps, versus the sedentary ceiling of 150Mbps with regular old LTE (cat 4) on the original S5.

Key hardware of Samsung's Galaxy S5 Plus

  • 5.1in Super AMOLED touchscreen (1080 x 1920 at 342ppi).
  • Android 4.4.2 KitKat.
  • 2.5GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 chipset.
  • 2GB RAM.
  • 16/32 GB internal storage.
  • MicroSD card slot for expansion up to 128GB.
  • 16MP primary camera.
  • 2MP secondary camera.
  • Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi, and microUSB connectivity.
  • 2,800 mAh battery, which provides a claimed talk-time of up to 21 hours, and standby time of up to 390 hours.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 is currently one of the most powerful chipsets available for smartphone manufacture, and this means the S5 Plus will be going toe-to-toe with the likes of Motorola Droid Turbo, LG G3, Galaxy Note Edge, and Google Nexus 6 in the benchmarking arena as all of these devices are currently entering the market with the same chipset.

However, the technical specifications of Samsung Galaxy S5 Plus are arguably a notch behind the South Korean electronics giant's recently released large-screen flagship, the Galaxy Note 4. The UK version of the Note 4 boasts the same quad-core Snapdragon 805 chipset, but it is clocked at 2.7GHz with 3GB RAM, and has a higher resolution screen with greater pixel density (1440 x 2560 at 515ppi).
