Law enforcement officials in the US state of Arizona have confirmed that the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of American television presenter Savannah Guthrie, is now being treated as a criminal abduction.

The alarming development was announced during a press conference held by the Pima County Sheriff's Department. Authorities have stated that evidence found at the scene suggests the elderly woman was taken against her will from her home near Tucson.

Timeline of the Disappearance

The concern for Nancy Guthrie began on Sunday, 1 February 2026. A friend from her local church noticed that she was not present and raised the alarm. According to reports, Nancy was last seen the previous evening, on Saturday, 31 January 2026, at approximately 9:30 p.m.

She was at her residence near Tucson, a city in southern Arizona. Upon receiving the call from the concerned friend, Nancy's family went to her home to check on her well-being. When they could not locate her, they immediately contacted emergency services to report her missing.

Shift From Rescue to Criminal Investigation

Initially, the response involved a standard search-and-rescue mission. The Pima County Sheriff's Department deployed significant resources to the area, including helicopters, drones, and tracking dogs, hoping to find the 84-year-old if she had wandered off. However, the nature of the investigation changed rapidly based on what deputies discovered inside the home. Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos addressed the media to explain why this case was different from typical missing person calls involving the elderly.

'We get these calls quite often, and we do a good job of searching the area,' Sheriff Nanos said during the conference. 'But, this one stood out because of what was described to us at the scene and what we found and located just in looking at the scene.'

The Sheriff was firm in his assessment of the situation, stating that the authorities 'can't ignore' the evidence they uncovered. While he did not provide specific details on exactly what physical evidence was found, to protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation, he was clear about the conclusion the police had reached regarding her departure from the house.

'She did not leave on her own, we know that,' Nanos told reporters.

Police Designate Home as a Crime Scene

As of Monday, 2 February 2026, the property has been officially designated as a 'crime scene'. The investigation has been escalated to the department's homicide team, which handles serious violent crimes. Sergeant David Stivers, a member of the homicide unit, noted that investigators found 'circumstances on scene' that were 'suspicious in nature'. This classification allows detectives to use more resources and treat the disappearance as a potential kidnapping rather than a case of a confused elderly person wandering away from home.

One of the key factors leading to this conclusion was the state of the house. Sheriff Nanos revealed that Nancy had left behind essential items that she would never normally leave without if she were going out voluntarily. The presence of these items inside the house strongly supports the theory that she was removed from the premises forcefully or abruptly.

Critical Medical Concerns

The situation is particularly urgent due to Nancy Guthrie's health. At 84 years of age, she suffers from physical ailments that require strict medical attention. Sheriff Nanos highlighted that she is in need of daily medication. The lack of this medication poses a severe threat to her life.

'This is an 84-year-old lady who suffers from some physical ailments, has some physical challenges, is in need of medication — medication that, if she doesn't have in 24 hours, it could be fatal,' Nanos stated.

This 24-hour window has likely already passed since she was last seen on 31 January, increasing the desperation of the search. The police are treating the situation with the highest priority, understanding that time is running out due to her medical needs.

Appeal for Public Assistance

The Pima County Sheriff's Department is urging the public to come forward with any information. Sheriff Nanos has asked anyone who might have seen anything suspicious near Tucson on the night of 31 January or the morning of 1 February to contact authorities immediately. They are asking anyone with leads to call 911. The connection to Savannah Guthrie, a prominent host of the 'Today' show, has brought national attention to the case, but local authorities are focused on the ground search and the forensic evidence left at the Arizona home.
