Rumours mills are in overdrive suggesting that former WWE superstar Shawn Michaels could return to the ring and fight AJ Styles for the WWE Championship.

The Heart Break Kid has been out of action for the last six years following his fight against The Undertaker at Wrestlemania 26. As the former WWE world heavyweight champion had placed his career on the line, he never returned to the ring after he lost the match against the Deadman.

Reports claim that the former wrestler could square off for the last time against The Phenomenal at Royal Rumble 2017 scheduled to be held in Alamodome, San Antonio, where some 20 years ago, Michaels won the WWE Championship against Sycho Sid. It is also rumoured that WWE officials have made Michaels an offer and are awaiting a response.

Michaels, who has remained a WWE ambassador since December 2010, has moved his family to Orlando, where he is quite happy filling in as a trainer at the Performance Centre for WWE.

In May, Styles had said that he would love to fight Michaels. However, Styles was not optimistic about the former superstar returning to WWE as a wrestler.

"Shawn Michaels made everything mean something, whether it was a punch, a slam, a kick... Whatever he did, it meant something. Even if he didn't do anything crazy, you always walked away thinking 'wow, what a great match!' It's because he did all the little things that mattered; that made it a great match. That's what I admire about Shawn Michaels – that's someone I want to be like," Styles had told ESPN.
