Shia LaBeouf Arrested for Assault During Mardi Gras in New Orleans — Transformers' Star's Past Arrests Resurface
LaBeouf faced multiple arrests in 2017 and 2020, including allegations of abuse from former partner FKA Twigs

American actor Shia LaBeouf has been arrested and charged with battery following a physical altercation during Mardi Gras celebrations in New Orleans, Louisiana. Police confirmed that the 39-year-old star was taken into custody early Tuesday morning after allegedly striking two men outside a business establishment in the city's historic French Quarter.
What Happened in the French Quarter Altercation
According to the New Orleans Police Department, officers responded to a disturbance call at approximately 12:45 a.m. on Tuesday, 17 February. The incident occurred at a venue within the French Quarter, a district famous for its nightlife and currently teeming with tourists for the Mardi Gras holiday.
Witnesses and police statements indicate that LaBeouf became 'increasingly aggressive' while inside the establishment. Staff members reportedly asked the actor to leave the premises due to his behaviour. An eyewitness account suggests that while employees were escorting him out, the situation escalated. Once outside on the pavement, the actor allegedly struck a man 'multiple times with closed fists.'
Following the initial scuffle, witnesses stated that LaBeouf walked away from the scene but returned shortly after. Upon his return, he allegedly continued to act aggressively. Police reports state that several individuals attempted to restrain the actor, releasing him in the hope that he would depart the area. However, the situation deteriorated further.
The first victim told responding officers that LaBeouf struck him a second time. A second man also reported being punched in the nose by the actor. Bystanders eventually held LaBeouf down on the ground until law enforcement arrived. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment of minor, undisclosed injuries before being formally booked into police custody. He currently faces two counts of simple battery.
Legal Troubles and Public Struggles
This arrest in New Orleans is the latest in a series of legal issues that have shadowed LaBeouf's career for nearly a decade. The former child star, who found massive success with the 'Transformers' franchise and 'Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,' has frequently made headlines for his off-screen conduct.
In 2017, LaBeouf was arrested in New York City for public drunkenness and disorderly conduct during a protest, an event that was captured on a livestream. Later that same year, he was arrested in Savannah, Georgia, while filming 'The Peanut Butter Falcon'. In that incident, he was charged with obstruction and disorderly conduct after becoming aggressive with a police officer. He was subsequently sentenced to probation and ordered to undergo anger management and alcohol counselling.
LaBeouf has previously spoken openly about his battles with addiction and mental health. Following his 2017 arrest, he entered a court-mandated rehabilitation programme. He has attributed much of his substance abuse to untreated trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) stemming from his childhood.
Past Abuse Allegations and Rehabilitation Efforts
The actor's reputation faced its most significant challenge in 2020 when British singer FKA Twigs, born Tahliah Barnett, filed a lawsuit against him. The suit alleged that LaBeouf was physically and emotionally abusive during their relationship. Barnett accused him of placing her in a state of constant fear, claiming he once slammed her against a car and attempted to strangle her. The lawsuit also alleged he knowingly transmitted a sexually transmitted disease to her.
LaBeouf initially denied the specific allegations in a 2021 legal filing but issued a separate public statement apologising for his behaviour, acknowledging he had been abusive to himself and those around him for years. The high-profile lawsuit was eventually settled in July.
Since those allegations surfaced, LaBeouf has reportedly sought long-term support for his sobriety, including therapy and structured recovery programmes. He has largely stayed out of the Hollywood spotlight, focusing on his family. He shares a daughter, born in 2022, with his partner, actor Mia Goth.
As of Tuesday evening, jail records did not list a defence solicitor for LaBeouf, and his representatives have not yet issued a comment regarding the New Orleans incident.
