The couch gag for the episode pays tribute to Adventure Time, as it turns the residents of Springfield into characters from the hit Cartoon Network series, with Bart as the human and Homer as the dog. Executive producer Al Jean teased an "elaborate crossover" between the two shows in episode 1. He told TV Line, "That was the brain child of Mike Anderson, our supervising director." He added that Adventure Time creator Pendleton Ward also recorded lyrics for the gag.

"It's a really beautiful, elaborate crossover," Jean teased. Adventure Time follows the lives of Jake the dog and Finn as they fight to protect the magical land of Ooo.

The premiere episode will find Mr Burns staging a musical at the Springfield Bowl to compensate for a childhood trauma. Also, actor Amy Schumer will voice Burns' mother in flashbacks. Al Jean spoke to Entertainment Weekly, teased a big secret reveal for Mr Burns in the chapter. "We learn something that might have made him [Mr burns] the man he is. We discover he was the equivalent of an Internet fail sensation in, like, 1917."
