Playstation 6 News and Hardware Updates: Sony Reveals New Pulse Wireless Headset Range Officially

Sony Interactive Entertainment has unveiled two new wireless headsets for PlayStation 5, with the PlayStation Pulse Wireless Headset set to launch in select markets during the 2026 holiday season and the Pulse Edge Wireless Headset due to begin launching in early 2027. The confirmed hardware announcement comes as questions about Sony's next-generation console remain unanswered.

For context, Sony has not formally unveiled a console called the PlayStation 6, nor has it announced a release date, price or specifications for its next-generation hardware. During Sony Group's Corporate Strategy and FY2025 earnings presentation on 8 May 2026, President and CEO Hiroki Totoki said the company had not decided when to launch its next console or how much it would cost.

PlayStation 6 News Remains Limited to Sony's Next-Generation Plans

Totoki's comments came during a question-and-answer session about rising component costs and Sony's future console plans. He said the company was continuing to monitor market conditions as it considered the timing and pricing of its next-generation hardware.

Sony has acknowledged work around its future PlayStation platform, but it has not announced a product carrying the PlayStation 6 name. That distinction is important because reports about possible launch years, specifications and pricing remain unofficial unless confirmed by the company.

Recent speculation has also centred on the possibility of a next-generation PlayStation handheld. Sony has not announced such a device, provided a product name or disclosed a release window or price. As a result, purported specifications and price estimates circulating online should not be presented as confirmed PlayStation hardware information.

Some reports have referred to a rumoured handheld under the codename Project Canis, but the company has not publicly confirmed that codename. Recent claims about detailed processor, graphics and memory configurations have also been disputed, making them unsuitable to present as verified new specifications.

The clearest official guidance therefore remains Sony's own statement that decisions on the timing and pricing of its next console had not been finalised as of May. Totoki also pointed to elevated memory costs and continuing supply pressures as factors Sony was considering while evaluating its future hardware strategy.

That leaves any specific PlayStation 6 launch year, retail price or technical configuration in the realm of speculation for now. Until Sony formally announces the hardware, reports about the system should be clearly separated from confirmed company statements.

PlayStation 6 News Gives Way to Confirmed Pulse Hardware

While Sony has kept its next-generation console plans limited, Sony Interactive Entertainment has provided firm details about its refreshed PS5 audio range. The company announced the PlayStation Pulse Wireless Headset and Pulse Edge Wireless Headset on 15 September.

Both models use custom, studio-inspired planar magnetic drivers designed to improve sound separation and spatial accuracy. Sony said the larger planar drivers are also intended to deliver fuller and deeper bass while retaining the clarity associated with its earlier Pulse Elite headset.

The two headsets support PlayStation Link, Sony's wireless audio technology for lossless, low-latency sound. They can connect to supported devices including PS5 consoles, the PlayStation Portal remote player, PC and Mac, while also supporting simultaneous connections to compatible Bluetooth devices.

Both models include microphones with AI-enhanced noise rejection and built-in volume controls. The Pulse Edge adds several premium features, including active noise cancellation, a detachable boom microphone and built-in game-audio and chat-balance controls for PS5.

Pulse Edge will also include a carrying case and an audio/microphone jack. Sony's comparison table says its planar drivers use eight magnets per driver, compared with four magnets per driver in the standard PlayStation Pulse model.

Sony has not yet announced prices, pre-order dates or exact launch dates for either headset. The PlayStation Pulse Wireless Headset is scheduled to begin launching in select markets during the 2026 holiday season, while the Pulse Edge launch is expected to begin in early 2027.

For now, the Pulse range represents Sony's most clearly defined new PlayStation hardware announcement. By contrast, the company's next-generation console remains without a formally announced product name, release date, price or specifications.
