Animal rescuers are urging prospective owners of Samoyeds, after Swift and Kelce's dog debut, to research before owning one Tommy Hilfiger

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's decision to introduce their fluffy white Samoyed to the public has drawn attention towards the distinctive breed, but animal welfare advocates are urging fans to think carefully before rushing to get one of their own.

The couple's Samoyed, named Wendy, made her public debut in a Tommy Hilfiger campaign, where she was photographed with Kelce.

The public appearance has already coincided with increased interest in the breed, with the American Kennel Club reporting a 15 per cent rise in Samoyed searches on its website during the week Swift and Kelce's dog made her public debut.

Some breeders have reported receiving more enquiries, raising concerns that some prospective owners could be drawn to the breed solely because of its association with the superstar couple rather than its demanding care requirements.

Rescue Warning as Samoyed Interest Grows

Animal welfare concerns have emerged alongside the surge in attention. Rescue-focused coverage has warned that a sudden rise in demand can encourage people to acquire dogs without fully understanding what ownership involves, potentially creating problems if owners later discover that the breed does not suit their lifestyle.

AVMA president Dr Jen Quammen said, 'It's wonderful to see dogs bringing people so much joy, and a little star power never hurts. But the best match might not be the breed that's currently in the spotlight; it's about finding a dog that truly fits your home, your schedule and your lifestyle. And you don't have to wait until you bring a new dog home to start a conversation with a veterinarian or veterinary team.'

One person in the Malamute Planet Facebook community raised concerns about a 'potential problem' linked to the sudden popularity the breed is getting from Swift and Kelce's Samoyed. 'Before today this breed was relatively unknown in shelters, by next year this WILL change, I guarantee,' the post claimed.

The concerned member also urged prospective new owners to research the breed's grooming requirements and make sure a Samoyed 'fit your lifestyle.

American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) has similarly cautioned against choosing a dog breed impulsively because a particular breed has become trendy. It advises prospective owners to consider whether a dog is suitable for their household and points to shelters, rescue organisations and breed-specific rescue groups as possible sources for prospective owners.

The AVMA also identified unfulfilled expectations as a primary reason dogs are surrendered to shelters, making careful research particularly important when interest in a breed suddenly increases.

Wendy Puts Samoyeds Centre Stage

Wendy first drew public attention after being spotted with Kelce earlier this year, before the couple formally introduced her through the Tommy Hilfiger campaign. Kelce has since spoken publicly about Wendy, while reports have identified her as a female Samoyed who is over a year old.

The publicity has revived comparisons with previous celebrity-driven breed booms. The AKC has previously pointed to increased interest in breeds associated with major films and famous owners, including Dalmatians, retrievers, and Portuguese water dogs.

Samoyeds ranked 55th among US dog breeds in 2025, suggesting the breed has room to climb if current interest translates into sustained demand.

For fans tempted by Wendy's photogenic appearance, animal welfare groups and veterinary experts are urging caution over imitation.
