An Instagram model has warned people to "not meet up with someone you don't know" after she was beaten so badly on a date that her brain twisted inside her skull.

India Ali, who was viciously assaulted in Los Angeles, California, by 27-year-old James Baker after agreeing to go on a date with him through Instagram, said that she is "trying to put the word out for the younger generation" after meeting user _frontpagejay.

Baker posted videos from the date at The Cheesecake Factory, showing Ali being plied with alcohol before the pair went to the Westin Hotel.

It was in their hotel room that Baker launched the attack on Ali, leaving her with a brain so swollen that it twisted to expand inside her head.

Ali, who was unconscious during the attack, woke up to find the hotel room splattered with blood and vomit.

"I lifted up my head and saw all the throw-up. My face was laying in it on the floor," she told the New York Daily News.

"I got up and looked on the bed and there was blood everywhere. I made my way to the bathroom and saw bloody towels on the floor."

Clambering around to find her possessions, Ali found that her car keys and purse had gone.

"I thought what if they come back and see I'm alive and really try to kill me? I felt they left me for dead but by the good grace of God I woke up," said the 32-year-old.

The mother-of-two spent a week in intensive care after the horrific attack.

"The amount of blows she received caused her brain to basically twist in her skull, causing veins that connect her brain to shear," Los Angeles Deputy District Attorney David Berger said during Baker's trial.

"She was bleeding through her ears, mouth and nose because of the blood building up inside her brain."

Baker was convicted of felony assault and will be sentenced on June 5. He faces up to ten years' imprisonment.
