Lucifer stars Tom Ellis as the devil on vacation Lucifer/Fox

Fox released the first trailer for Lucifer season 2 at the San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday (23 July). The new video begins with a recapitulation of the events of season 1 of the Warner Bros show and goes on to feature the journey of the fallen angel from hell to earth and then back to hell. As Lucifer Morningstar discovers human feelings in him, he will be faced with a greater catastrophe in season 2.

In the trailer, the Lord of Hell finds himself in a tricky situation after being rendered mortal and killed. As he returns to his "home sweet home", aka the hell – courtesy his escaped mother, who left the gates open – he is tasked with finding his family matriarch, who seems to have burst out of hell.

"Trapped in Hell for thousands of years by God (her ex-husband), the Mother of Angels is now free on Earth," is the official description of Lucifer's mother, according to Comic Book.

"Once reunited with Lucifer, it will become clear that she's the one he takes after. Mom is fearless and has a strong conviction for who she is and what she deserves. However, mother and son do not share the same opinion when it comes to humanity. Everything that fascinates Lucifer about people repels Mom," the description continues.

It further stated that the Devil is desperate to find out his mother's motive and teased if the series regular starring Tricia Helfer as the escaped angel is innocent or not?

"The introduction of mom brings a whole new dynamic to the show," Tom Ellis, who plays the seductive devil, said during the SDCC panel. He also added that the characters "behave differently" when she returns. "You see the formidable characters be really not so formidable."

While, the resurfacing of the Devil's mother is going to affect the relationship between the brothers – Lucifer and Amenadiel – Helfer teased that the one to be most affected would be Maze, Lucifer's confidante. "There is no love lost between Maze and mom," the 42-year-old actress assured.

The fantasy series has so far spun an interesting relationship between the fallen angel and LAPD detective Chloe Decker starring Lauren German. Executive producer Joe Henderson promised that this angle will be further explored in the upcoming season this fall.

"In season two, Lucifer is actively spending time with Chloe Decker even though he knows she makes him vulnerable. What does that say about him? What does that say about his subconscious? Why Chloe affects him... will be the question we will be answering in season two," Henderson said.

Lucifer season 2 will return on 19 September at 9pm EST on Fox.
