World leaders and politicians took to social media to post tributes to the victims of the Hamas attack three years ago. The Prime Minister of Israel's account on X also posted a LEGO video appearing to explain the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

'Three years on from the October 7 attacks on Israel, we remember those who were senselessly killed by Hamas terrorists. The impact of the attacks has been felt not just in Israel, but in Jewish communities across the world who still bear the burden of the tragic events that day,' said UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham.

According to the Israeli Foreign Ministry, 1,200 people, comprising of Israelis and foreign nationals, were killed during the 7 October 2023 Hamas attack and around 250 were taken hostage. Burnham has pledged to come down hard on antisemitism and announced funding for the protection of synagogues, schools, and community buildings.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, for his part, enumerated the Canadians who lost their lives in the attack. 'Canada unequivocally condemns Hamas, which must play no role in the future governance of a demilitarised Palestinian state,' he said.

Countries including the UK and Canada have called for a two-state solution to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. European Council President António Costa also said that the two-state solution is the only 'viable path to a just and lasting peace in the Middle East.'

Memorial Candle for the Victims

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu lit a memorial candle in his office in Jerusalem to commemorate the victims of the Hamas attack. 'The nation unites on this day in the longing for our dear ones. We will complete the mission: we have settled the score and will continue settling the score with all the murderers,' he said on social media.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who is no stranger to war, also shared his condolences and sorrow: 'No other act of terror and no other war of aggression rooted in hatred should be forgiven or forgotten. There have already been far too many killings in the 21st century, a century that should have been, and must still become, entirely different.'

Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten remembered the chaos that descended in Israel and Palestine following the Hamas attack. 'The region descended into a spiral of conflict and misery. Tens of thousands of innocent Palestinians have been killed by the Israeli army since the Hamas attack,' he said.

Many American politicians and officials shared words of remembrance. President Donald Trump said on Truth Social: I fought relentlessly to bring the hostages home, and reunite them with their loved ones, and I did, both the living and the dead!

French President Emmanuel Macron also remembered the 51 French nationals who died on 7 October 2023. He said: 'Combating antisemitism and terrorism, everywhere and always, working for peace and the security of all: that is France's commitment.'

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has called for a permanent ceasefire, respect for international law and implementation of the Comprehensive Plan to End the Gaza Conflict.

Romanian President Nicușor Dan echoed the need for a permanent ceasefire: 'Romania stands behind the Board of Peace and has opened its hospitals to children from Gaza. The fragile ceasefire must become a lasting settlement, one that gives Israelis security and Palestinians a state of their own.'
