MTV Video Music Awards 2017: Nominations, performers and everything else you need to know

The nominations for the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards were announced on 25 July on the network's Instagram account. Kendrick Lamar leads the list with eight nominations, followed by Katy Perry and The Weeknd, who have five nods each.

While the network selects the nominees, fans get to vote online for their favourites artists on the MTV website.

Each year the VMAs provides the viewers with some dramatic moments. In 2016, Britney Spears returned to the showafter a nine-year sabbatical, while Drake publicised his love for Rihanna. The previous year Kanye West declared that he will run for president in 2020.

When and where is the 2017 MTV VMAs being held?

This year's MTV VMAs is scheduled to be held on August 27 at The Forum in Inglewood, California. The indoor arena is best known for being the home stadium of NBA team Los Angeles Lakers from 1967–1999.

Who is hosting the 2017 MTV VMAs?

Katy Perry will host the 2017 MTV VMAs. Stars like Miley Cyrus , Russell Brand and Jamie Foxx have previously helmed the show.

In a promo photo, the Grammy winner was pictured in a spacesuit holding an MTV flag and sporting a peace sign. Perry said in a statement: "I've been training with MTV in zero gravity, eating astronaut ice cream, and I'm on a group text with Buzz Aldrin and Neil deGrasse Tyson. Come August 27, I'll be ready to be your MOONWOMAN! Brace for impact, kids."

What's new at the 2017 MTV VMAs?

The most notable change this year will be made to the iconic Moonman trophy. MTV president Chris McCarthy revealed that the statue will be referred to as "Moon Person" in order to do away with sexism and bring a more gender-neutral vibe to the awards ceremony.

Earlier this year MTV eliminated gender-specific categories at the MTV Movie & TV Awards. The VMAs is set to see a similar transformation with the Best Male Video and Best Female Video being replaced with a single Artist of the Year award.

A new awards category titled Best Fight Against the System will also debut this year. It's actually a restyling of the award that was previously known as the Best Video With a Social Message.
