AOKP ROM featuring Android 4.2.1 software released for Nexus 4. XDA developers

XDA developer AOKP_ROM has released an AOKP custom ROM based on the latest version of Android 4.2.1 (Jelly Bean), for the Nexus 4. The developer notes bugs are likely in this preview build.

Nexus 4 users looking to update may follow this tutorial. IBTimes UK reminds its readers it will not be responsible for any damage to the device during installation. Users are also advised this tutorial is only for the Nexus 4.

Pre-Requisites

  • Download USB drivers for Nexus 4 and enable USB debugging mode
  • Ensure bootloader is unlocked
  • Ensure device is rooted and has ClockWorkMod (CWM) Recovery installed
  • Ensure battery has at least 80 percent charge
  • Ensure back-up of all important data before following the guide

Steps to Install Android 4.2.1 AOKP (Jelly Bean) on Nexus 4

  • Download AOKP Android 4.2.1 (Jelly Bean) custom firmware for Nexus 4 (alternate link)
  • Download Google apps package
  • Connect Nexus 4 to computer using USB cable and transfer downloaded files to SD card
    • Note: Do not extract any file
  • Disconnect device and switch it off
  • Re-start device in Recovery mode (to do so, boot into bootloader, browse to Recovery using Volume buttons and select option using Power. Another option without using a key combination can be found here)
  • Perform Nandroid backup of present ROM (to do so, select Backup and Restore > Backup and return to main Recovery menu after action is completed
  • Perform a data wipe by selecting Wipe Data/Factory Reset > Yes and return to main Recovery menu after action is completed
  • Select Format/System under mounts and storage > Yes
  • Select Install Zip from SD Card using Power and select Choose Zip from SD Card the same way
  • Now browse to Jelly Bean ROM file copied to SD card, select using Power and confirm installation by selecting Yes on next screen
  • Once ROM is installed, repeat procedure to flash Google apps package
  • After the installation, return to main CWM Recovery menu, select Wipe Cache Partition > Wipe Dalvik Cache (under advanced options)
  • Return to Recovery menu and select Reboot System Now (first boot may take some time)
    • Note: To return to previous ROM, boot into Recovery, select Backup and Restore and restore previous ROM by selecting from list

The AOKP custom ROM, based on Android 4.2.1, is now installed and running on the Nexus 4. Navigate to Settings > About Phone to verify software version.
