Live Updates

Well that brings an end to our live coverage from the Champions League. We'll have all the reaction from Switzerland on our site over the coming hours.

Tomorrow we're back with coverage of Arsenal and Everton in the Europa League. But until then, it's goodbye.

Michael Lang nets the winner for Basel.

Basel repeat that heroic win over United from six years ago to beat the three-time winners again. They might not be heading out, but Jose Mourinho will be fuming by the manner of this result.

Full time: Basel 1-0 Manchester United

Manchester United dramatically beaten in Switzerland as Michael Lang's late, late goal sees Basel keep their last 16 hopes alive.

United dominated, and I mean dominated, the first 45 minutes but their grip on the contest slipped in the second half and in the end Basel were worth their win.

Ibrahimovic heads over as United look to grab an equaliser, but it is a desperate stuff now from the visitors.

GOAL! Basel 1-0 Manchester United (Michael Lang)

Basel have what is surely the winner with a minute to go. Petretta plays a teasing ball in and though Akanji can't make contract Lang comes in round the back to tap into a virtually empty net. Nothing less than the home side deserve based on their second half display.

Elyounoussi goes to ground clutching his face, somewhat theatrically. Play eventually resumes. Will we have a winner in this game? Lots of chances but both sides have lacked cutting edge.

In taking that shot from range, Serey Die has picked up a knee problem and after receiving treatment he drops to the turf off the ball. Fransson will come on for the final 10 minutes.

Sergio Romero called upon again as he pushed away Die's effort from 30 yards. This game is very much in the balance now, with Basel going all out for a much-needed win.

Ibrahimovic on for the final 15 minutes. Lukaku moves to the right as he did against Newcastle to accommodate for the Swede.

Marcos Rojo on his return has made a fine contribution, brilliantly blocking Oberlin's shot. Another opening for the hosts. Zlatan Ibrahimovic is on his way....

Basel want a penalty as Steffen goes over the outstretched leg of Rojo, but the referee waves away the appeals. And on reflection, it is the right decision. The winger clearly dived over the Argentine.

United really coming under fire now and Michael lang hits the post with a deft header. Romero wasn't keeping that one out. Basel have dominated this second half and could be ahead.

Paul Pogba gets another 65 minutes under his belt on his return from a hamstring problem. Nemanja Matic replaces him. Very decent performance from the Frenchman.

Romero forced into another save, getting down low to keep out Steffen's deflected shot. United look a bit off it since the break.

Marouane Fellaini has spurned three decent chances for United.

Marcus Rashford being prepped by Jose Mourinho. An hour gone and still no breakthrough Jesse Lingard going off.

Basel much-improved at the start of this second half and Renato Steffen tries one from range which is saved easily by Romero.

Back under way in Switzerland. Can Manchester United get the breakthrough?

Half time: Basel 0-0 Manchester United

One way traffic in Switzerland but it remains goalless. Manchester United have had chances aplenty, with Marcos Rojo and Marouane Fellaini both hitting the woodwork. Anthony Martial and Romelu Lukaku have also had chances.

Basel have offered very little in an attacking sense and have played second fiddle for long periods. It seems like a matter of when, and not if United get the opening goal.

OFF THE BAR! Marcos Rojo hits one which takes a big deflection off Suchy's head and thunders off the crossbar. Vaclik was nowhere.

Anthony Martial drives past the Basel defence on the break and it takes a fine save from Vaclik to keep the scores level. United have totally dominated this game.

OFF THE POST! United inches away from taking the lead. Martial whips a ball in and when Fellaini heads goalwards again, it strikes the outside of the post.

Jesse Lingard starts for Manchester United tonight.

This United is a really strong and powerful unit, much like Mourinho's first side at Chelsea when he arrived in England. They're trying to smash through Basel tonight without using much guile, which might not be pleasant on the eye but so far ensures they have a firm grip on this game.

Tomáš Vaclík unconvincingly palms the ball behind his own goal as United go aerial inn an attempt to grab the opening goal. The visitors have been in total control thus far but are yet to have a goal to show for it.

Fellaini should put United ahead now. He guides a header from a free-kick but he can't find the target. Poor miss in the end.

Two chances in a minute for United. Lukaku is played in by Pogba - the Belgian is actually offside - but Vaclik makes the save.

Then a cross from the left find Fellaini at the back post but his header is cleared off the line by Manuel Akanji.

The Basel pitch was relayed after Switzerland's World Cup play-off success against Northern Ireland and it appears to be coping in the early stages here, though aesthetically it would be fair to say it looks a bit ropy.

Fine run from Mohamed Elyounoussi down the United left, cutting into the penalty area but he can't keep control of the ball and it goes behind. Low key start overall.

Under way in Switzerland.

Teams out of the tunnel at St Jacob's Park. Only a point needed for Manchester United to take their place in the last 16 of the Champions League.

Shame that we don't get another sight of Ricky van Wolfswinkel, who is out of the Basel team tonight through injury. He was woeful at Old Trafford in the first game between these two, having been laughably bad at Norwich City during his spell in the Premier League.

Jose Mourinho on BT Sport: It is not going to be easy. We know it is going to be difficult. I need to give some players some rest, I need to give some players a chance.

Manchester United are almost certain to qualify for the last 16, but can they go all the way in this season's competition?

When the Champions League returns in February United could feasibly be out of sight in the Premier League title race - Man City are already eight points ahead - and Europe may represent the only chance of a trophy this season.

And after another summer full of spending, some silverware is surely the only reasonable return.

If you want to keep abreast of the other games tonight, including Juventus vs Barcelona, then head to our second live blog which is running alongside this one. You can follow all the goals from those other five games there.

And Manchester United have now arrived ahead of kick-off. Cue the headphones catwalk.

United fans have arrived at St Jacob Park.

Chelsea have joined Tottenham and Man City in the knock-out stage by thrashing 10-man Qarabag again in Azerbaijan. One red card, two penalties and four goals in that one. More of the same please.

So what of Henrikh Mkhitaryan? The Armenian is right out of contention at United, much like the start of last term, and his future at Old Trafford must now in doubt. Seven changes tonight made by Mourinho yet there is no place for the ex-Borussia Dortmund man tonight.

Here is the all-important info-graphic. All is right with the world.

And right on cue....

No news on the Basel team yet but I shall have the news first as and when it drops.

A first appearance of the season for Marcos Rojo, as Manchester United make seven changes from the win over Newcastle.

Sergio Romero, Matteo Darmian, Daley Blind, Ander Herrera, Marouane Fellaini and Jesse Lingard also return.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan misses out altogether, but Luke Shaw is on the bench.

The Manchester United team for tonight's game.

Marcos Rojo also back for Manchester United. Full team news to follow.

Some early team news from Switzerland: Jesse Lingard is in line to start for Manchester United tonight. He has made just five starts this season.

Chelsea have already kick-started the action tonight with an early kick-off in Azerbaijan. The find out how they are doing, head over to our live blog for the final 12 minutes. There have been plenty of talking points.

Good news for Basel ahead of kick-off with CSKA winning 2-0 against Benfica. A win for the Swiss tonight will take them through to the last 16.

Team news should be with us any minute now, but how do we expect both sides to line up?

Basel are without Ricky van Wolfswinkel and Germano Vailati due to injury. Taulant Xhaka meanwhile is suspended after picking up a second yellow card of the competition against CSKA.

Manchester United are missing Eric Bailly, Phil Jones and Michael Carrick, all of whom have not travelled to Switzerland. Paul Pogba will start again after his return from a hamstring problem.

With Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City having safely booked their place in the last 16, it is now the turn of Manchester United to join the Premier League pair.

Jose Mourinho's side have won their opening four groups games with relative ease but still need a point to be mathematically certain of qualifying for the knock-out phase.

Opponents Basel meanwhile also need a win to ensure they remain in the fight for qualification. The Swiss outfit will be hoping for a repeat of their famous win over United in 2011, when they knocked the three-time winners out of the competition with a 2-1 win at St Jacob Park.

All the team news and build-up ahead of the 7:45pm kick-off on the way.
