Johnny Furphy made waves in Las Vegas as the Chicago Bulls defeated the Indiana Pacers by nine points. But it was the Pacers' own wing who left ears ringing with a sensational dunk that's taken social media by storm. Furphy's performance, fresh off a rookie season where he showed glimpses of talent, included some pretty polished playmaking and explosive athleticism that suggests a bright future ahead.

Bulked-Up and Better Than Ever

Coming into the game, the now 20‑year‑old wing had already impressed scouts following his Summer League opener, highlighted in a Forbes piece discussing his offseason improvements. Indiana's coaching staff and front office, in particular, praised Furphy's added 20 lb of muscle that increased his on-court effectiveness. As Forbes notes, he 'gained 20 pounds' and is already 'one of the strongest, most athletic dudes on our team'.

The man's skill was evident from the tip-off. Furphy attacked the rim with gusto, using his improved strength to drive past defenders and absorb contact. His aggressiveness earned him early opportunities at the basket, resulting in a mix of made buckets and trips to the free-throw line.

Smooth Playmaker Emerges

Beyond his physicality, it was Furphy's maturing court vision that was more impressive. The Las Vegas Summer League's coverage highlighted his smooth playmaking and maturity in directing traffic on the court, as outlined by Through the Phog.

He was scoring crucial points throughout the game. But more significantly, he also assisted teammates in key moments. He was able to boost his averages to approximately 9.5 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game.

This development is significant. During his lone full season last year, Furphy averaged just 2.1 points per game over 50 appearances. His transformation to a confident floor general is clearly seen with the Summer League's developments.

Dunk of the Summer League

The moment everyone is talking about came in the second quarter. The contender for the Dunk of the Summer League was set up when Furphy grabbed a rebound from the Pacers' side of the court. He then surged the length of the court, and unleashed a one-handed hammer over Bulls rookie Noa Essengue.

This electrifying play was promptly labelled the dunk of the tournament by Yahoo Sports, and photos showed Essengue helpless under the posterising highlight. Watch the shot below:

That single dunk has sparked renewed debate about Furphy's role in this season's rotation. It was also quite the visual proof of his explosive athleticism and fearless mindset on the court.

Eye on the NBA

While his mid-court heroics earned the headlines, Furphy also displayed quieter improvements. He was shooting inside effectively, grabbing rebounds, and making the correct decision on passes.

However, his shooting range remains a work in progress. Furphy missed all attempts from beyond the arc. This was a signal of an area he needed to address ahead of the regular season.

As Pacers Summer League coach Isaac Yacob said, Furphy's added strength and on-court intelligence have been 'purely additive', but he still needs consistency in shooting and ball control. His turnovers (five in two games) reflect youthful eagerness, yet he's far from finished. Furphy himself said he's 'very far away from where I will be in a few years', emphasising the patience required to hone his talents.
