'Abhorrent and Heartbreaking': Couple Sentenced After Abuse of 7-Year-Old Niece

A San Diego child abuse case ended on 11 September when Devin Hughes and Kayla Reynolds were sentenced to 25 years in prison.

The couple pleaded guilty to 15 felony counts linked to the repeated abuse of Hughes' seven-year-old niece.

The child escaped their mobile home in Boulevard in July 2025 and ran to a neighbour asking for help. Prosecutors said she had visible injuries, including bruises, scars, burn marks and a black eye.

The San Diego County District Attorney's Office said the girl is now living with a family member and recovering.

Girl Escaped Mobile Home and Sought Help

According to the DA's office, the girl escaped the mobile home in Boulevard, California, in July 2025 and ran to a neighbour's home. She asked the neighbour if she could live with him because she was being beaten and abused, prompting him to contact authorities.

When sheriff's deputies arrived, they observed that the girl was malnourished and had visible injuries, including bruises, scars, burn marks and a black eye.

The girl told deputies that Hughes had tied her hands behind her back with a zip tie and then tripped her, causing the black eye, according to the DA's office.

She also said the defendants cut her hair with a pocketknife, burned her with vape pens, starved her and forced her to drink dirty toilet water.

The DA's office said she was also forced to hold her urine until she wet herself and then clean it up using her tongue. The girl told deputies she was often chained to a treadmill using a cable lock and forced to sleep on the floor.

Deputies Found Zip Ties, Cable Locks and Vape Pens

Sheriff's deputies searched the mobile home after the girl escaped.

According to the DA's office, they found 'horrendous living conditions' as well as zip ties, cable locks and vape pens.

The DA said the items corroborated the girl's account of the abuse.

During her hospitalisation at Rady Children's Hospital, the girl gained five pounds, according to the DA's office. She was later placed with a family member.

The DA's office said she is now 'thriving in her new environment'.

Couple Sentenced to 25 Years

Hughes and Reynolds pleaded guilty in March to 15 felony counts arising from the abuse.

The charges included torture, child abuse, corporal injury, mayhem and assault likely to cause great bodily injury. They were sentenced to 25 years in prison on 11 September.

San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan described the abuse as 'abhorrent and heartbreaking'.

'Our prosecution team, the dedicated deputies and detectives at the Sheriff's Office, along with the medical staff at Rady Children's Hospital who nursed the victim back to health all stepped in to restore her health and safety,' Stephan said.

She added that the girl 'finally has a chance to blossom without the oppressive abuse of her wicked family members'.

Deputy District Attorney Seralyn Fields prosecuted the case.

The criminal case is effectively over, with Hughes and Reynolds facing decades behind bars. What happens to a child after this kind of ordeal is a much messier question, one no sentencing memo can really answer.
