A mysterious vessel spotted under construction at a Chinese shipyard appears to be designed for a role that no other navy is publicly known to have operationalised at this scale. Satellite imagery suggests it could be a dedicated mothership for carrying and launching giant uncrewed submarines.

The ship was spotted under construction at the Hudong-Zhonghua shipyard in Shanghai, according to Naval News, which reviewed multiple satellite images to assess its likely role. Its unusual design appears unique, although its precise purpose has not been officially confirmed.

What the Satellite Images Show

The vessel resembles an amphibious landing ship, with a well deck at the stern similar to those used to launch smaller landing craft. But the arrangement appears to allow a large cradle to be inserted beneath the submarine and lowered into the water using twelve vertical 'jack-up' arms.

There is also a hangar forward of the well deck, which could be intended to store the submersibles when not in use.

Based on its estimated dimensions, Naval News assessed that the hangar could house four large drone submarines, or a greater number of smaller ones, although these remain estimates based on satellite imagery rather than confirmed specifications.

China's Existing Fleet of Giant Robot Submarines

China has already built full-sized uncrewed underwater vehicles, referred to as XXLUUVs, or extra-extra large uncrewed underwater vehicles. Two types have previously been observed undergoing testing in waters around Hainan in the South China Sea, according to Naval News.

These vessels have been estimated at 35 and 45 metres in length, making them around six to eight times the overall size of the US Navy's Boeing Orca XLUUV. They have so far been tested using specialised floating docks, from which they can be launched and recovered.

The new mothership could provide a mobile platform for maintaining, launching and recovering the drones at sea, although its eventual operational role has not been confirmed. Naval News has assessed that such a vessel could make sustained deployments more practical than relying on the floating docks used during testing.

Why a Civilian Explanation Doesn't Fit

The ship's design bears some resemblance to a Chinese proposal from 2025 for a civilian research submersible carrier, according to the Naval News analysis. However, the new vessel appears somewhat larger, while its enclosed hangar differs from the earlier concept's open working deck.

Naval News assessed that the presence of an internal hangar, combined with the vessel's scale and launch-and-recovery arrangement, makes a civilian or research role less likely.

The publication assessed that the most plausible explanation is that the ship is a dedicated mothership for China's giant uncrewed submarines, although this remains an open-source assessment rather than a confirmed Chinese military designation.

If confirmed, the vessel would represent another development in China's expanding naval and shipbuilding capabilities.

The Congressional Research Service calls China's navy the world's largest by ship count, while CSIS highlights China's dominance in global shipbuilding.

It could also become one of the first publicly identified dedicated support platforms specifically designed around China's full-sized uncrewed submarines.

However, because the vessel is still under construction, it is too early to describe China as operating such a capability.

Naval News has suggested that China's XXLUUVs could eventually have a long-range combat role, with their size potentially allowing them to carry larger payloads and undertake more complex missions.

Their precise intended roles remain uncertain, while a functioning mothership could make sustained deployments more practical than relying on floating docks used during testing.

Exactly how Beijing plans to use the vessels remains unclear, as does whether China intends to build additional motherships. The vessel's purpose has not been officially disclosed, and much of what is currently known comes from open-source satellite analysis rather than official statements.
