Parton's death came after Dean died in Nashville last year, on 3 March, at 82. His cause of death was not publicly disclosed, although Parton said he had been ill for some time.

Parton's nephew Bryan Seaver announced her death in an emotional video, revealing that she had asked him years earlier to deliver the news when the time came. He paid tribute to his aunt's influence, saying she had 'opened doors' for generations of singers, songwriters, musicians and dreamers.

Her family said a small, private service would be held for immediate relatives and asked fans wishing to honour her memory to support Dolly Parton's Imagination Library. Parton had been hospitalised in Nashville on 21 August, just days before her death.

Following Dean's death, Parton wrote: 'Carl and I spent many wonderful years together. Words can't do justice to the love we shared.' She later dedicated the song 'If You Hadn't Been There' to her late husband.

Parton met Dean in 1964, when she was 18 and had just moved to Nashville. The pair first spoke outside the Wishy Washy Laundromat, where Parton had gone to do her laundry. Dean was 21 at the time.

They tied the knot on 30 May 1966 in Ringgold, Georgia, in an intimate ceremony attended only by Parton, Dean, her mother, the preacher, and his wife.

Dean worked in the asphalt paving business and deliberately stayed away from his wife's celebrity world. Parton often described them as opposites, but credited their differences with keeping their relationship strong.

'We're completely opposite, but that's what makes it fun,' she once said, describing Dean as secure, funny and deeply private.

The couple renewed their vows in 2016 for their 50th anniversary, marking five decades together.

The 'Open' Relationship Rules

One of the most talked-about aspects of Parton and Dean's marriage was their unconventional approach to their relationship.

In a 2002 interview with Hot Press, Parton described their marriage as a 'totally open relationship', a remark that later fuelled speculation about whether the couple practised non-monogamy.

Parton, however, clarified that 'open' did not mean their marriage was sexually open. She explained that Dean knew she was a flirt and was not jealous, while she was equally unconcerned by his interactions with others.

Parton stressed that their arrangement was based on trust, humour and an understanding of each other's personalities rather than outside sexual relationships.

'Yes, it's an open relationship, but not sexually,' she said. 'At the end of the day we love each other madly.'
