MAGA Senator's Jack Smith Ambush Crashes and Burns as Katie Britt Watches in Shock

Eric Schmitt was being touted as a potential JD Vance running mate on Tuesday morning. Hours later, the Missouri senator was at the centre of a viral Senate fiasco after his attempt to corner former special counsel Jack Smith unravelled over two basketball teams.

Axios reported that Schmitt, a first-term Republican senator from Missouri and former state attorney general, had grown close to Vance and was drawing attention as a possible 2028 running mate. The report said Vance viewed Schmitt as 'trustworthy, intelligent, articulate and a deft political operator'.

Then came Schmitt's questioning of Jack Smith.

Schmitt Sets His Perjury Trap

During a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on Smith's investigations into Donald Trump, Schmitt questioned the former special counsel about his whereabouts on 3 February 2024.

Schmitt said he had text messages indicating Smith was in Atlanta attending an NBA game between the Golden State Warriors and Atlanta Hawks, appearing to link Smith to Fulton County District Attorney Fani T. Willis at a time when she was facing scrutiny over her relationship with special prosecutor Nathan Wade.

Schmitt then turned up the pressure.

'What would you say if I had a series of text messages from your team that said you were in Atlanta at a Warrior/Hawks game?' he asked.

'I don't think you know that we have this stuff, so I'll give you a second to process it so you don't perjure yourself,' Schmitt added.

He subsequently accused Smith of lying under oath and declared: 'You will go down as a total dirtbag.'

It looked like Schmitt believed he had landed a major blow. Then Smith explained what the messages appeared to refer to.

The Hawks-Hawkeyes Mix-Up

Smith said he had not attended an Atlanta Hawks game and did not recall being in Atlanta in his role as special counsel.

He did remember attending a women's college basketball game at the University of Maryland on February 3, 2024, where Iowa star Caitlin Clark was playing.

The game was in College Park, Maryland. Iowa's team was the Hawkeyes, not the Atlanta Hawks.

Amy Klobuchar quickly spotted the apparent mix-up.

'Could it then be that University of Iowa is the Hawkeyes?' the Minnesota Democrat asked, as the premise of Schmitt's questioning began to unravel.

Klobuchar later told Schmitt that senators should have their facts straight before accusing someone of being a 'dirtbag'.

Katie Britt's Stunned Reaction

Sitting beside Schmitt was Republican Senator Katie Britt of Alabama.

As Smith explained that he had been at the Maryland-Iowa game rather than an Atlanta Hawks game, cameras captured Britt with her mouth open and eyes widened. The footage quickly became a viral part of the story.

Her reaction gave the hearing an almost surreal visual: Schmitt's attempted takedown was falling apart while the senator beside him appeared visibly stunned.

The clip then spread across social media, turning the Eric Schmitt Senate hearing into a much bigger online spectacle.

Conservative Celebrations Backfire

The fallout became even stranger online.

Conservative commentator Benny Johnson initially declared that Schmitt had caught Smith perjuring himself, before deleting the post. Fox News host Sean Hannity also highlighted Schmitt's questioning on X and later deleted his post, according to The Washington Post.

The episode had already moved from a Senate confrontation to a viral political spectacle before the day was over.

Schmitt later defended his approach on The Charlie Kirk Show, saying his job was to ask the question and that Smith had given his answer.

He also appeared to lean into the basketball confusion, posting on X: 'Who knew Jack Smith was a Caitlin Clark fan?'

A Very Different Political Headline

The timing made the episode particularly striking.

Just hours earlier, Axios had presented Eric Schmitt as a potential JD Vance VP prospect and described him as a 'deft political operator'. By the end of the day, his most widely shared Senate moment was an attempted Jack Smith 'gotcha' that collapsed after an apparent mix-up between the Atlanta Hawks and Iowa Hawkeyes.

For a senator suddenly attracting attention as a possible future running mate, it was one extraordinary day on Capitol Hill.
