Freddie Jackson, the Grammy-nominated R&B singer whose 1980s ballads 'Rock Me Tonight (For Old Times Sake)' and 'You Are My Lady' became staples of quiet-storm radio and helped define an era of romantic soul, has died aged 70.

His family confirmed his death in a statement posted to his official Instagram account on Monday. Jackson died that day, three days after his 70th birthday. No cause of death has been disclosed.

Quiet storm is a radio format associated with smooth, slow- to midtempo R&B and romantic soul. Jackson, who was born on 2 October 1956, rose to prominence in the mid-1980s and became a mainstay of R&B and contemporary urban radio during the 1980s and early 1990s.

Some outlets, including People and the Los Angeles Times, initially reported Jackson's age as 69. The Associated Press reported that he was 70, which is consistent with his reported birth date of 2 October 1956 and his death on 5 October 2026.

From Harlem Pews to R&B Stardom

Jackson was born and raised in Harlem, where he began singing gospel at White Rock Baptist Church before moving into New York's club scene.

In the late 1970s, he performed with the R&B band Mystic Merlin before returning to New York and beginning his solo career.

He released his debut solo album, 'Rock Me Tonight,' in 1985. It reached No 1 on the R&B album chart and was certified platinum, while its singles became major successes on the R&B charts and helped establish him as a leading performer in the genre.

The album helped earn Jackson two Grammy nominations in 1986: best new artist, and best male R&B vocal performance for 'You Are My Lady.'

His 1987 follow-up, 'Just Like the First Time,' also went platinum, extending his run of successful R&B releases. Recordings from that decade remain closely associated with the era's romantic R&B sound.

Health Battle Revealed Months Before Death

Jackson had previously spoken publicly about his health. In September 2024, he revealed in a video posted to his social media accounts that he had been diagnosed with kidney disease, People magazine reported at the time. He had used his public platform to raise awareness of the condition since that disclosure.

He said he wanted to use his experience to educate others and that he had partnered with the National Kidney Foundation to do so.

His family has not disclosed a cause of death, and there is no public confirmation that his kidney disease was related to his death.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that about 14 per cent of American adults aged 18 and over, or roughly 37 million people, have chronic kidney disease. It says about 87 per cent of adults aged 20 and over with the condition do not know they have it.

Chronic kidney disease occurs when the kidneys become damaged and cannot filter blood properly. The condition can cause waste and excess fluid to build up in the body and can increase the risk of complications, including heart disease. The CDC describes it as a common and serious health condition.

Jackson's music continued to resonate with R&B audiences decades after his breakthrough in the 1980s.
