Google has officially announced the Pixel 10a, the latest addition to its affordable A-series smartphone line. Priced at $499, the device aims to balance premium features with budget-friendly costs. While it retains the custom-built Google Tensor G4 chip found in its predecessor, the Pixel 9a, the new model introduces significant improvements in battery life, display durability and safety features.

A Return to Flat Design and Ergonomics

One of the most immediate changes is the physical design of the phone. For years, the mobile industry chased the trend of curved screens and rounded edges, which often made devices slippery and harder to hold. The Pixel 10a embraces a completely flat design, a feature that has been missing from many mid-range phones in recent years. This shift prioritises comfort and grip, making the device easier to pocket and hold for long periods.

The build quality includes a 100 per cent recycled aluminium frame with a satin finish and a composite matte back. It is available in four colours: Lavender, Berry, Fog and Obsidian. This design choice signals a move away from the flashy, fragile glass backs of competitors, focusing instead on practical durability.

Display Improvements and Durability

While the Pixel 10a keeps the 6.3-inch OLED panel and the smooth 60–120Hz refresh rate seen on the Pixel 9a, the durability and brightness have received a boost. The new model swaps the older Corning Gorilla Glass 3 for the stronger Gorilla Glass 7i. This upgrade should provide much better protection against drops and scratches, which is a common concern for users who prefer not to use a heavy case.

Brightness has also been increased. The Pixel 10a reaches 2,000 nits for HDR content and a peak brightness of 3,000 nits. In comparison, the Pixel 9a topped out at 1,800 nits and 2,700 nits respectively. This makes the screen significantly easier to read in direct sunlight. The contrast ratio has also doubled to 2,000,000:1, offering deeper blacks and richer colours when streaming video.

Battery Life and Charging Upgrades

Battery performance is a headline feature for the Pixel 10a. The device offers more than 30 hours of standard battery life. However, the real improvement is in the 'Extreme Battery Saver' mode. When this mode is active, the phone can last up to 120 hours, a solid increase from the 100-hour limit of the Pixel 9a.

Both phones use a 5,100mAh battery and 23W wired charging. However, wireless charging sees a slight speed increase. The Pixel 10a supports up to 10W wireless charging with compatible chargers, compared to the 7.5W limit on the previous model. While not a massive leap, it adds convenience for users who rely on wireless stands at their desks or bedside tables.

The Pixel 10a's hidden upgrade: satellite SOS for emergency help in remote areas.

Software Tools Over Hardware Changes

In terms of photography, the hardware remains largely unchanged. The Pixel 10a uses the same 48-megapixel main camera and 13-megapixel ultra-wide lens as the 9a. There is no dedicated telephoto lens for zoom. However, Google uses its AI software to improve the experience.

New features include 'Camera Coach', which gives on-screen tips to help users frame their shots better. 'Macro Focus' has also been added, allowing for sharp close-up photos of small objects like flowers or textures—a feature that was sometimes difficult to use on the 9a. Additionally, 'Auto Best Take' helps in group photos by combining the best expressions from a burst of images into one perfect shot, ensuring no one is blinking.

Satellite SOS and Performance

The most critical hardware addition is hidden inside the phone. The Pixel 10a includes a newer modem capable of Satellite SOS. This feature allows users to contact emergency services even when there is no mobile or Wi-Fi signal. For hikers, travellers or those living in remote areas, this safety tool is a major reason to consider the newer model over the Pixel 9a.

Performance-wise, day-to-day speed will feel identical to the previous generation, as both run on the Tensor G4 chip with 8GB of RAM. The Pixel 10a ships with Android 16 and includes seven years of security and operating system updates, ensuring it remains useful well into the next decade.
