A 40-year-old man has been critically injured by police in Kent after officers opened fire at the scene of a stabbing in Hersden, near Canterbury.

Armed police and negotiators were called to an address at Elms Road in the village at 11.20pm on Sunday (8 February) to reports a young woman had been stabbed there.

The man and the woman were taken to hospital and are both in a critical condition.

Police said they were members of the same family. The incident has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

A police van and forensic investigation vehicle are still parked outside the house, which has been taped off. There were reports of a police helicopter and dogs being used during the incident.
