With the availability of the latest stock Android Lollipop update for the Nvidia Shield Tablet, developers have brought out the root access for the gaming device. Junior XDA developer, sandrodjay, has shared a rooting method and simplified it for a hassle-free process, which was originally posted by SuperPichu.

If you wish to gain root access on your Nvidia Shield Tablet using SuperSU root file, check out the following guide. Along with rooting, this method also installs CWM recovery on the tablet.

Points to remember

  • Create a backup of all important data of the tablet before following the root process.
  • The Shied Tablet should have above 80% battery charge.
  • Rooting the tablet will void the device of its manufacturer's warranty. Unlocking the Fastboot might void the warranty as it will display when you will unlock it.
  • The following process and the files used in this only work with Nvidia Shield Tablet. Applying this on any other device could damage the device.
  • Rooting the tablet will be at your own risk.

How to root and install CWM recovery on Nvidia Shield Tablet running Android 5.0 Lollipop

Step-1: Download and install the "Mini" ADB/Fastboot from here [Do not forget to say yes to create the link on the desktop as this will be useful later.]

Step-2: Download and install NVIDIA ADB Drivers from the official Nvidia site

Step-3: Enable Developer Mode on the Shield Tablet. For this navigate to Settings>> About tablet>> Tap more than five times on the Build number until the Developer Mode is activated. Now go to Developer Mode>> Enable USB Debugging

Step-4: Download CWM recovery and SuperSU root package on your PC. Rename the SuperSU to supersu.zip.

Now copy the CWM image and SuperSU to the similar location, where you installed the Mini ADB/Fastboot. It should under C:Program FilesMinimal ADB and Fastboot

Step-5: Click the link created by the Mini ADB/Fastboot installation. It should open a DOS console already at the install folder.

Step-6: In the Windows PC type in the following command

  • adb reboot bootloader

Step-7: From the rebooted tab, using the Volume keys select Load fastboot protocol and use the Power to confirm

Step-8: Again in the Windows PC type fastboot oem unlock

Note: This step will wipe out the data of the device. Press the Volume Down button to select this and Power button to select Unlock bootloader option on your device

Step-9: In the Windows PC type "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img" to install the recovery

Step-10: On the tablet, select recovery reboot

Step-11: You should get the CWM recovery. From the recovery, select install zip from >> install from sideload

Step-12: In the console, type adb sideload supersu.zip to flash the root package

Step-13: Once the installation is completed, go back to CWM recovery and select reboot system. CWM will ask you to keep root, say Yes for this

You can now enjoy your rooted Nvidia Shield Tablet.
