Palestinian Gunman Kills Israeli Father of Six, Then Commandos Raid Ramallah Hospital To Seize Suspect

An Israeli father of six was shot dead at a West Bank spring as he prepared to immerse for Yom Kippur, and hours later Israeli commandos raided a Ramallah area hospital to seize the wounded Palestinian suspect who had fled there.

The victim was Netanel Shukrun, an information systems analyst in his 30s from the settlement of Alei Zahav. He had travelled to the spring near Neve Tzuf, north of Ramallah, with his eldest son to immerse before the Day of Atonement, the Samaria Regional Council said.

Gunfire at the Spring

A gunman opened fire from a passing vehicle toward Israelis gathered at the spring, striking Shukrun as he sat in his own car. Footage circulating on social media appeared to show bathers ducking for cover as shots rang out. Neither man was driving.

Magen David Adom paramedics found him unconscious with multiple gunshot wounds and briefly restored his pulse before he was airlifted to Beilinson Hospital in Petah Tikva, where he later died.

Commandos Raid the Hospital

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said a combat tracker from its Binyamin Regional Brigade reached the scene within minutes and shot the fleeing attacker, wounding him. The gunman then left the scene. The IDF said he later reached a hospital in the Ramallah area for treatment. Palestinian sources named the facility as the H Clinic in adjoining al-Bireh.

Hours later, commandos from the IDF's Duvdevan undercover unit, acting with the Shin Bet security agency and Israel Police, raided the hospital and captured him. Security camera footage showed a red Mitsubishi used in the attack. During the search, troops backed by drones had surrounded the nearby Palestinian village of Deir Nizam.

A Push To Execute the Attacker

National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir demanded the suspect be put to death, calling it the first test of Israel's death penalty law for terrorists. 'This is the law that allows us to execute the terrorist, and this is the opportunity,' he said.

The Knesset passed the law in March by a 62-48 vote. It requires Palestinians convicted of deadly attacks in military courts to be executed unless judges find special grounds for life imprisonment. Because only Palestinians face those courts, the measure applies to them alone, and it has drawn legal challenges and sharp criticism from Israeli and international rights groups. The demand reopened Israel's long fight over capital punishment, a debate closely followed in the US.

Violence Across the West Bank

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said 'no terrorist is immune', and ordered reinforced troops, closures, arrests, and the immediate demolition of the attacker's home. IDF Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir visited the scene and said the army would seal off the suspect's village.

The shooting was not the only bloodshed that day. Israeli soldiers killed a Palestinian motorist near the settlement of Ganim in the northern West Bank, saying he had tried to ram them. Reuters said it could not independently verify that account. Earlier, an Israeli raid in Al-Mughayyir led to the detention of at least 28 Palestinians.

Hamas praised the spring shooting without claiming responsibility. Violence across the territory has climbed since the group's 7 October 2023 attack on Israel.
