The glittering skyline of Los Angeles recently served as the backdrop for a stark act of public accountability. A massive billboard prominently featuring the face of beauty mogul James Charles appeared in the heart of the city, bearing a message that reignited years of simmering controversy.

The billboard did not promote a new eyeshadow palette or a reality competition show; instead, it boldly addressed the grooming allegations that have plagued the influencer's career since 2021. Its impact was immediate, with many social media users celebrating the callout. 'Finally', they said.

Viral Billboard Sparks Global Social Media Frenzy

TikTok creator @the.hollywood.fix.tiktok shared a video of a huge billboard in Los Angeles featuring the makeup guru. However, it was not an ordinary advert but a sharp callout to James Charles following his 2021 controversy, in which he was accused of grooming.

The billboard's design included the texts, 'SAY, JAMES, I HEAR YOU TEXT 'EM Young*' and a search box that read, 'James Charles Allegations'. Additionally, it featured the BBC's report where James admitted to messaging 16-year-old boys. Ted Entertainment Inc paid for the billboard.

The video went viral immediately, with many users expressing relief that James had finally been called out. 'James Charles is finally being called out! Look at this new billboard in Los Angeles, CA!' one wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Many also praised Ethan Klein, the CEO of Ted Company, for the advert. 'That's why we love Ethan Klein', one commented on TikTok. Another wrote, 'can't stand Ethan Klein but this i approve'.

Observers noted that the public nature of the callout contrasts sharply with the influencer's recent attempts to maintain a curated image. The consensus among critics was clear: the billboard represents a refusal to let the allegations fade.

The 2021 Scandal

The allegations referenced by the billboard date back to early 2021, when multiple teenage boys accused Charles of sending unsolicited, sexually explicit messages. In a 14-minute apology video titled 'Holding Myself Accountable', Charles admitted to interacting with two 16-year-old boys, the BBC reported.

He claimed at the time that he was 'reckless' and believed the individuals were 18, though he acknowledged that the responsibility for verifying age rested solely with him. 'I fully understand my actions and how they are wrong', he said in the since-deleted video. 'These conversations should have never happened.'

The admission sent shockwaves through the industry, as Charles was then 21 and one of the most powerful figures in the beauty world.

YouTube Restricts Access to Partner Program

As the controversy deepened, YouTube took unprecedented action. The platform confirmed it had applied its 'Creator Responsibility Policy' to Charles's channel, which at the time boasted over 25 million subscribers. This resulted in his temporary removal from the YouTube Partner Program, effectively stripping him of his ability to earn advertising revenue from his content.

The company stated that the policy is invoked when a creator's off-platform behaviour harms the broader community or the platform's reputation. Despite the loss of this revenue stream, Charles eventually returned to posting. However, the stigma of the demonetisation remains a significant mark on his professional record, serving as a reminder of the platform's power to penalise real-world harm.

Charles's 2023 Quest to be 'Un-Cancelled'

In a candid July 2023 interview with Cosmopolitan, Charles addressed his desire to move past the scandals. He spoke openly about the mental toll of the backlash, admitting he had contemplated suicide during the height of the 'cancel culture' firestorm.

Charles expressed a hope of being 'un-cancelled', arguing that he had done the work to learn from his past mistakes. He insisted that while he had been irresponsible, the narrative had been twisted by those seeking to profit from his downfall.

'I think it's important that we allow people to grow and to learn,' he told Cosmopolitan. The idea that somebody f***s up and then their entire life and career and everything that they've ever worked for should be swept out from under their feet is just horrifying.'

However, the recent LA billboard suggests that for a significant portion of the public, an interview is not enough to erase the past. The debate over whether an influencer can truly be rehabilitated continues to divide the internet, with the billboard serving as a towering reminder of the work still to be done.
