Jay-Z May Perform at Super Bowl Since 'Nobody Wants the Burden to Do the Show' Amid Macklemore Controversy

Jay-Z could perform at the 2027 Super Bowl halftime show in Los Angeles, according to a report citing a source close to the rapper and the NFL, as organisers reportedly face difficulty securing a headliner amid heightened scrutiny of artists and major US sporting venues.

Super Bowl LXI is scheduled for 14 February 2027 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. The NFL and Roc Nation had not announced a performer as of 19 September.

The source claimed Jay-Z could lead a multi-artist show, although neither organisation has publicly confirmed that he is being considered.

Jay-Z May Join Halftime Show Talks

The report comes after Macklemore was removed from Ed Sheeran's US tour following pro-Palestinian remarks at New Jersey's MetLife Stadium on 4 September. The rapper said 'Free Palestine' while introducing Hind's Hall, a protest song about the Israel-Gaza conflict.

Macklemore later alleged that New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft pressured Sheeran to remove him from the tour. He claimed Kraft had also contacted other stadium owners and that they had presented Sheeran with an ultimatum.

Kraft confirmed that he had intervened to prevent Macklemore from performing at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts. However, he did not publicly confirm Macklemore's wider claim about coordinating with other venue owners.

'Gillette Stadium has a longstanding commitment to providing a welcoming environment for all guests and ensuring that events held at our venue do not provide a platform for hate speech,' Kraft said in a statement.

He added that the decision followed Macklemore's recent actions and what Kraft described as 'a broader history of antisemitic rhetoric and imagery that we believe has been deeply offensive and hurtful to the Jewish community.'

Kraft also said the decision was not intended to diminish Palestinian suffering or deny anyone the right to advocate on behalf of Palestinians. He argued that such advocacy 'should not come at the expense of the Jewish community or obscure the responsibility of Hamas.'

Sheeran has said Macklemore's removal was the promoter's decision, not his own. The promoter, Messina Touring Group, said venues had warned that they would not allow concerts with Macklemore on the line-up, claiming the dispute could affect the tour and hundreds of thousands of fans.

Finneas, Lukas Graham, Aaron Rowe and Beoga subsequently withdrew from the remaining dates. Their departures widened the controversy around the tour, but do not establish that the same artists' concerns apply to the Super Bowl.

The dispute illustrates the scrutiny artists can face when their public statements intersect with politics, particularly at major US sporting venues. That wider context is relevant to the report about the 2027 halftime show, but it does not prove why any particular artist may accept or reject the booking.

Jay-Z May Perform With Guests

A source close to Jay-Z and the NFL said that organisers were having difficulty securing a performer because artists were wary of criticism and possible political backlash.

'The likelihood of this year's Super Bowl halftime show having more than one person is very high, because Jay-Z and the NFL are having a hard time locking anyone down,' the source said.

The source claimed Jay-Z might perform with several friends 'to get things over the hump.' They also referred to criticism surrounding recent halftime performers, including Bad Bunny and Kendrick Lamar, and suggested artists could face further attention if US President Donald Trump objected to a booking.

'If anyone is going to do the halftime show and has any political statement, or if Trump hates the pick, it's never-ending talk,' the source said. 'Who wants that?'

Those claims remain unverified. The NFL and Roc Nation have not announced Jay-Z as a performer, and neither has confirmed that the search is being delayed by political concerns.

Jay-Z has an established connection to the event. Roc Nation's partnership with the NFL, announced in 2019, includes advising on artist selection and helping produce the halftime show.

Jay-Z has served as the company's adviser while performers including Jennifer Lopez, Shakira, The Weeknd, Dr Dre, Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, Usher and Bad Bunny have taken the headline role.

A performance by Jay-Z would therefore represent a change in position, rather than a completely separate arrangement. His existing relationship with Roc Nation and the NFL could make him a potentially straightforward option, although that has not been confirmed.

He is also in the midst of his JAŸ-Z 30 stadium series, which celebrates 30 years of Reasonable Doubt and 25 years of The Blueprint. The series has included performances at Yankee Stadium, Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and Stade de France, with two SoFi Stadium shows scheduled for 23 and 24 October.

The Los Angeles dates are particularly notable because SoFi Stadium is also scheduled to host Super Bowl LXI. Still, the venue connection alone does not indicate that Jay-Z has been selected for the halftime show.

The financial structure of the event may also shape negotiations. Performers do not usually receive a conventional high-value appearance fee from the NFL, although production costs and expenses are covered. The exposure and promotional value have traditionally formed the main incentive.
