The death marks a devastating end to a relationship that began through prison correspondence in 2017, survived an engagement and separation, and ultimately saw the couple reunite, build a home together, and welcome daughter Aurora Raina Urker in December 2024.

From Prison Pen Pal To Fiancé

Urker first connected with Blanchard while she was serving a prison sentence for her role in the killing of her mother, Dee Dee Blanchard. After watching the HBO documentary Mommy Dead and Dearest, he wrote her a letter of support, beginning a correspondence that soon became a close friendship and then a romance.

The relationship developed despite the physical distance between them, with the pair speaking regularly and eventually becoming engaged in 2018 while Blanchard was still behind bars. Their romance later ended in 2019, but the connection between them would prove difficult to leave in the past.

Blanchard subsequently married Ryan Anderson while incarcerated, but their marriage ended after her release from prison in December 2023. By April 2024, she and Urker had reunited, beginning another chapter in their unusual love story.

Reunited And Starting A Family

The reconciliation quickly became more serious. Blanchard and Urker announced they were expecting their first child together in 2024, with their daughter Aurora Raina Urker arriving on 28 December that year.

Their daughter represented a remarkable transformation for Urker, who had first entered Blanchard's life through letters while she was imprisoned. He was now raising a child with the woman he had first fallen in love with from behind prison walls.

The couple's relationship still faced challenges. A&E reported that they entered couples therapy in 2025 and later moved towards living together full-time, as they attempted to establish a more stable family life after years of separation and public attention.

His Final Birthday

Urker's death occurred on 1 October, which was also his birthday. According to PEOPLE, Blanchard sent him a birthday message but became concerned when he did not respond. Her brother Dylan and his wife subsequently went to the Louisiana home, where they found Urker unresponsive.

The Lafourche Sheriff's Office confirmed that deputies responded to a residence in Raceland at approximately 6:15 pm and found Urker dead upon arrival. Authorities said the death investigation was continuing.

The circumstances surrounding Urker's death remain under investigation. Blanchard has since told PEOPLE that she believes he suffered an apparent overdose, but stressed that she does not know what substance he may have taken or whether the overdose was intentional.
