Rapper Kanye West was never going to enjoy a quiet birthday but his doting wife Kim Kardashian really pulled out the stops this year.

In celebration of her husband's 38th birthday, the Keeping Up With The Kardashians reality star hired the Staples Center in Los Angeles so the All Day rapper could play basketball with his friends.

The star-studded party included a host of famous faces, including West's friends John Legend and his wife Chrissy Teigen, singer Justin Bieber, rappers Tyga and Pusha T, and his family members Kylie Jenner and Khloe and Kourtney Kardashian.

In order to keep the surprise, Kardashian, 34, blindfolded the hip hop star while travelling to the venue. After the big reveal, West changed into the basketball kit provided by his wife, designed with "East" and "West" for both teams.

Even more impressive was the fact that the reality star, who is pregnant with their second child, managed to enlist several NBA players to join in the celebrations.

Legendary basketball player John Salley served as the announcer while Houston Rockets star James Harden coached one of the teams with rapper 2 Chainz taking the lead of the opposing side.

Adding another personal touch to the party, West was serenaded by his longtime friend John Legend who sang Happy Birthday.

A source told E! News of the extravagant celebrations: "Kim rented out the Staples Center so Kanye and his boys could play an NBA-style game with real refs and Laker girls!"

The insider alleges that the whole shindig set the TV star back around $110,000 (£72,000). Not only that, but Kardashian reportedly had a basketball court built in the backyard of their Hidden Hills mansion.
