Stranger Things' Maya Hawke recently made headlines at her 'surprise wedding', at which both her famous parents made an appearance. Now, days after, people are asking – are they still together? The straightforward answer is simple: Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke are no longer together, but both remain closely involved in their daughter Maya Hawke's life and career.

Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke met in 1996 on the set of Gattaca. They married in 1998 and welcomed their daughter Maya on 08 July 1998, while their son, Levon Hawke, was born in 2002. The couple divorced in 2005. Since their separation, both have continued to co-parent Maya and Levon. There has been no indication of a reconciliation.

Maya Hawke has said her parents kept her out of the spotlight during childhood. Despite their fame, she described her upbringing as normal and focused on family life, and has said they were loving, present and protective. In October 2021, she told The Guardian, 'They were wary of the public life side of acting and the difficulties of that,' she said. 'They also tried to protect me from falling into acting.'

She explained that they did not want her attending every red carpet or taking small roles in their films. 'They wanted to ensure I had a strong enough backbone, my own passion for it and work ethic,' she said. Once she was older and clear about her decision, she said they became supportive.

Acting Advice From Uma Thurman And Ethan Hawke

Although they did not push her into acting, Maya chose the profession. She has appeared in projects including the 2017 Little Women mini-series, Stranger Things and Do Revenge. Throughout her career, she has sought guidance from both parents. In July 2019, she told WSJ. Magazine, 'I'm always running decisions by them.'

She noted that they have similar levels of success but different experiences within the industry. In May 2021, she told PEOPLE about her bond with her father. 'We're always working together in one way or another,' she said, adding that she sees him as her teacher. She has also said her parents are direct in their feedback.

'I know my parents don't B.S. me,' she said on The Jenny McCarthy Show in July 2019. 'They're pretty rigorous in terms of their commentary when they like something or don't.'

Public Support For Maya's Career

Both Thurman and Hawke have publicly expressed pride in their daughter. In November 2020, Hawke said on Late Night With Seth Meyers, 'She's always been gifted.' He added that they have always had an easy dialogue about art. When Maya debuted as Robin Buckley in Stranger Things in July 2019, Thurman shared her support on Instagram. She referred to her 'victorious loving mermaid daughter' and congratulated her on the series. In February 2022, Thurman told Access Hollywood that acting was inevitable for Maya.

'In the end, she is such a brilliant actress, obviously there's nothing else she would have ever done,' she said. Hawke also spoke to the Los Angeles Times in July 2022 about his daughter's perspective. 'She's really smart. She's been through a lot in her life,' he said, referencing the experience of growing up with paparazzi attention.

Working Together On Screen

Maya has also worked professionally with both parents. In 2020, she played her father's daughter in The Good Lord Bird. Then, in 2023, she starred alongside her mother in The Kill Room. Speaking in August 2022 on Live with Kelly and Ryan, she said, 'I love working with both of them. They're really awesome.'
