Playing his first game since parting ways with coach Ivan Lendl, Murray began his title defence in Miami with a victory in the second round against Matthew Ebden.
The British number one went down, 0-3, before the Australian managed to nick the first set, 6-3, in his favour. However, the world number six was keen to prevent elimination in the early stages and clinched the subsequent sets, 6-0, 6-1, to secure his progress into the third round after playing for 97 minutes.
Having secured a bye in the first round, 32nd seed Feliciano Lopez overcame Jiri Vesely ousting the Czech Republican, 6-2, 7-6 (3), in the second round.
Murray is undoubtedly the favourite to beat the Spaniard as he aims to lift the trophy in Miami for the third time in his career; achieving the feat for the first time defeating Novak Djokovic in 2009.
The pair's last meeting came in this year's Australian Open where the Brit triumphed in straight sets.
Murray holds an 8-0 lead against Lopez in overall meetings between the pair, which includes four victories in grand slam events.
