'Elder Abuse' Claims Explode Over Mitch McConnell as Senator Is Wheeled in and Appears To Need Help Voting

Mitch McConnell's return to the Senate has quickly become the centre of a fierce online debate after new footage showed the 84-year-old Republican being wheeled through the Capitol and appearing slow to respond before later needing prompting during a key Farm Bill vote.

The scenes, shared widely after his first Senate appearances since a serious health setback, have led some social media users to accuse those around him of 'elder abuse'.

McConnell Returns in a Wheelchair

McConnell returned to Capitol Hill on 14 September after roughly three months away following a fall at his Washington, DC, home in June.

He was briefly unconscious after the fall, was hospitalised and later treated for pneumonia before spending weeks in rehabilitation.

His return was highly anticipated because the Kentucky senator had been largely absent from public view while recovering. McConnell has acknowledged that he is still recovering and has previously said he was working towards returning to his full Senate schedule.

Footage from his return showed him being transported in a wheelchair while reporters attempted to speak with him. In the video discussed on The David Pakman Show, NewsNation reporter Jackie Koppel can be heard asking McConnell how he was feeling and whether he was doing OK.

McConnell offered little response before eventually raising his hand as the mobility vehicle prepared to leave.

'We don't know whether Mitch McConnell couldn't hear Jackie or if he was just really tired and choosing not to respond,' Pakman said.

Video Shows Confusing Farm Bill Vote

The controversy intensified after McConnell appeared at a Senate Agriculture Committee meeting on Wednesday, where lawmakers were voting on the Farm Bill.

During the vote, footage appeared to show McConnell hesitating after his name was called. Several people around him appeared to prompt him before he ultimately indicated an 'aye' vote. Reports said his vote helped break a deadlock and allowed the legislation to advance from the committee by a 12-11 party-line vote.

The New Republic described the footage as showing McConnell being told how to vote, while Mediaite reported that several people appeared to prompt him before the vote.

'Elder Abuse' Claims Spread Online

As the videos circulated, some commenters went far beyond questions about McConnell's ability to perform his duties.

One commenter wrote, 'This is elder abuse, and it is very clear that he is in no state to be voting for anything! Why isn't something being done about this!'

Another claimed, 'He doesn't know what he voted on, and he never will.'

A separate commenter described McConnell as a 'puppet for a vote', while others questioned why he was being brought back to the Senate in his current physical condition.

There is no evidence in the available footage proving that McConnell was being abused, coerced or forced to vote against his wishes.

For now, the videos have left viewers debating the boundary between an elderly senator continuing to fulfil his duties while recovering and legitimate questions about whether he is able to participate fully in the work of the Senate.
