Police Block Part of Street Outside RJ Mitte's Texas Home
Video obtained by TMZ captures multiple patrol vehicles stationed along the road outside Mitte's residence on Monday. Officers had restricted access to part of the street, while yellow police tape surrounded the property. The footage offers a glimpse of the authorities' response to the actor's unexpected death, although officials have not publicly explained why such extensive security measures were necessary.
TMZ reported that Mitte died by suicide, while Reuters separately reported that his publicist had confirmed the circumstances of his death. However, TMZ said law enforcement officials considered the investigation ongoing. Cameron County Justice of the Peace Cyndi Hinojosa did not provide an official cause of death and said an autopsy would be performed.
Actor's Sudden Death Leaves Upcoming Projects in Limbo
Mitte's passing has also disrupted several productions he had been developing. The actor was preparing to appear in Forgotten Outlaw, a film that remained in pre-production when he died. Its writer and director, Nik Tizekker, told TMZ that work had been suspended, although he intended to find another performer for the part and eventually complete the project.
Tizekker disclosed that he and Mitte had also collaborated on Like It Was Yesterday, a limited television series examining experiences involving brushes with death. Production had reportedly reached its midpoint, with Mitte having already recorded material for the programme.
RJ Mitte Made Public Appearance Days Before His Death
Just eight days before his passing, Mitte attended the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta in New Mexico alongside fellow Breaking Bad performer Luis Moncada. The pair appeared together at the 4 October event, which became one of Mitte's final documented public outings. He had also attended a Beverly Hills screening of his film Talking to Strangers on 30 September, per PEOPLE.
Mitte rose to international prominence through his portrayal of Walter White's son, Walter 'Flynn' White Jr., in Breaking Bad, appearing throughout the show's five-season run from 2008 to 2013. Like his character, the Louisiana-born actor lived with cerebral palsy. He subsequently used his public profile to challenge misconceptions about disability and campaign for greater opportunities for disabled performers.
Bryan Cranston, who portrayed Mitte's father in Breaking Bad, paid tribute to his former colleague following the announcement. Cranston recalled meeting Mitte when the younger actor was just 14 and watching him develop professionally over the years. He also praised Mitte's dedication to improving representation for people with disabilities in the entertainment industry.
