American actor and disability rights advocate RJ Mitte, best known for playing Walter White Jr in the television drama 'Breaking Bad,' has died aged 34, his representatives confirmed on Monday, 12 October 2026.

A report by TMZ said Mitte died by suicide, citing a county official. However, his cause of death had not been officially disclosed. Cameron County Justice of the Peace Cyndi Hinojosa told The Associated Press that an autopsy would be carried out.

Hinojosa said she declared Mitte dead at about 1:30pm local time in Brownsville, Texas. The Guardian reported that authorities did not suspect foul play, but an official cause of death had not been released in the reporting available.

Breakthrough Role in 'Breaking Bad'

Mitte rose to international recognition as Walter White Jr, the son of Bryan Cranston's character, Walter White, in the crime drama. The character's family life was upended as his father became involved in the manufacture and sale of methamphetamine. Like Mitte, Walter Jr had cerebral palsy.

Diagnosed with cerebral palsy at the age of three, Mitte drew on his own experiences to portray the character. He later told the Associated Press that dealing with physical therapy, family challenges and medical costs had given him a different perspective, describing his disability as an asset rather than a hindrance.

Mitte later appeared in the 2021 film 'Triumph,' playing a high school student with cerebral palsy who pursued his ambition to become a wrestler. His other screen credits included 'Switched at Birth,' 'Now Apocalypse' and 'The Guardians of Justice.'

He was part of the 'Breaking Bad' cast that won the Screen Actors Guild Award for outstanding performance by an ensemble in a drama series in 2014. The show ran for five seasons between 2008 and 2013 and won 16 Primetime Emmy Awards. Mitte also received the SAG-AFTRA Howard Russell Award in 2014.

Recent Projects and Final Appearance

Mitte attended a screening of the independent film 'Talking to Strangers' at the Fine Arts Theatre in Beverly Hills on 30 September. In the film, he played Joshua, a reclusive man with cerebral palsy navigating a romantic relationship.

According to People, Mitte's final public appearance was at the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta in New Mexico on 4 October, where he was pictured with 'Breaking Bad' co-star Luis Moncada. The publication also reported that his final social media post celebrated the event.

An episode of 'The Joe Vulpis Podcast,' featuring an interview recorded before his death, was released on 5 October. The discussion covered his experience on 'Breaking Bad' and his work after the series. Vulpis later told TMZ that they had also discussed upcoming film projects and Mitte's charitable activities.

Mitte became engaged to Kennedy Suarez in October 2025 after several years together.

Work for Disability Advocacy

Outside acting, Mitte served as an ambassador for United Cerebral Palsy and Shriners Children's, and was president of The Mitte Foundation, which supports charitable and community initiatives.

He used interviews and public appearances to challenge stereotypes and advocate for better representation of disabled people in entertainment. His representatives described him as a 'beloved actor, philanthropist, and passionate disability rights advocate' in the statement confirming his death.

The cause of death remains unconfirmed by authorities in the reports reviewed.
