Nancy Guthrie's case draws fresh scrutiny after retired FBI agent Jennifer Coffindaffer revealed four purported ransom emails and suspected scam links savannahguthrie/Instagram

Retired FBI special agent Jennifer Coffindaffer said in an interview published on 6 October that she received four purported ransom emails concerning Nancy Guthrie's disappearance and believes they were sent by scammers.

Nancy, the 84-year-old mother of Today co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, was last seen at her Catalina Foothills home on 31 January. She was reported missing on 1 February after authorities determined she had been taken from her home. Coffindaffer told Newsweek that the emails arrived in April, more than two months after Nancy was last seen.

Nancy Guthrie Ransom Emails Sought Bitcoin for Her Release

The emails purported to be from people claiming to have taken Nancy. The messages demanded bitcoin in exchange for her release and included an image that appeared to be AI-generated, according to Coffindaffer's account in the Newsweek interview.

Coffindaffer did not reply to any of the four emails. She took the messages directly to federal investigators, passing on the correspondence without entering into an exchange with the sender.

'I never responded to any of them,' she told the publication. 'I went straight to the FBI with them.'

Although Coffindaffer's interview was published in October, she said she received the four emails in April. Her disclosure therefore concerned messages sent months before a separate ransom-related communication reported in September.

Her account does not establish that the emails came from anyone involved in Nancy's disappearance. Coffindaffer herself believes they were the work of scammers, leaving the sender's claimed connection to the missing woman unverified.

The Suspected Link to Nancy Guthrie's Neighbour

Coffindaffer said she decided to speak publicly after learning that Lauren Serpa, a neighbour of Nancy's, had received a similar ransom-related message in September. Coffindaffer believes the same individual or group may have been responsible for both sets of messages.

That possible connection remains Coffindaffer's assessment. The account does not identify who contacted her or establish that the same sender approached Serpa. The similarity she described has not been presented as a confirmed link between the messages.

Separately, the Pima County Sheriff's Department said on 29 September that investigators had determined a newly reported possible ransom text related to Nancy's case was not credible.

'The PCSD/FBI Guthrie Task Force was made aware of a new possible ransom text message related to the Nancy Guthrie investigation. After further review, investigators determined the text message is not credible.'

The department's finding concerned the credibility of that text. The statement did not identify its sender or link it to Coffindaffer's emails.

Police Urge Vigilance in the Nancy Guthrie Investigation

Alongside the credibility assessment, the department appealed for vigilance from anyone receiving unsolicited messages. Its warning addressed attempts to exploit the situation, including demands for money and requests for personal information from members of the public.

'Scammers may attempt to take advantage of this situation. Do not send money or provide personal information in response to unsolicited messages.'

Rejecting the possible ransom text as not credible did not close the investigation. The department outlined continuing work on Nancy's disappearance, alongside assessments of further messages and inquiries into any potential attempts to obtain money through extortion.

'Investigators will continue to review reported messages for credibility and investigate any potential attempts at extortion. The Nancy Guthrie investigation remains active and ongoing.'

The Guthrie family has offered up to $1 million for information leading to Nancy's recovery. That family reward is separate from the bitcoin demands described by Coffindaffer. No suspect has been publicly identified in connection with Nancy's disappearance.
