Former WWE superstar Ric Flair has faced a wave of criticism after paying tribute to Dolly Parton following the country music icon's death at the age of 80.

Flair, 77, took to social media to remember Parton. But his message quickly drew attention for another reason. The WWE Hall of Famer also reflected on his own career and how he hopes his legacy will be remembered.

'Dolly, I'm 77, 3 Years Behind You, And I Only Hope That People Remember Me In The Same Light As You And Your Greatness! And You're A Much Bigger Star Than I Ever Dreamed Of Being!' Flair wrote.

Fans Didn't Feel Flair's Sincerity

While the post appeared intended as a tribute, some fans felt Flair had shifted the focus towards himself. His message clearly expressed admiration for Parton, some fans believe his decision to compare their respective legacies overshadowed what was meant to be a farewell to one of music's most enduring stars.

Many social media users did not feel the sincerity of the WWE legend's post and did not hesitate to criticise him.

'How have you turned a tribute to Dolly all about yourself? That's shameful,' one person replied.

Another fan wrote: 'You should delete this post... totally disrespectful.'

A third added: 'I guess you just can't help yourself and no chance of changing at this point.'

'Out of respect for Dolly I'm not gonna say what I want to say but you are a scumbag,' someone remarked.

As of now, Flair has not publicly responded to the criticism surrounding his tribute.

Parton's Remarkable Career and Legacy

Parton died on 25 August 2026, aged 80, following a battle with cancer. Her death brought an outpouring of tributes from across the entertainment industry.

Born in Tennessee in 1946, Parton grew up in a large family and rose from poverty to become one of the world's most recognisable entertainers. She first gained widespread attention through The Porter Wagoner Show in the 1960s before establishing herself as a hugely successful solo artist.

Parton's career eventually expanded beyond country music. She became an actress, producer and businesswoman. Her film credits included 9 to 5 and Steel Magnolias. She also co-founded Dollywood, the Tennessee theme park that became one of her most visible business ventures.

Her achievements were equally impressive. She was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1999 and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2022. She also received numerous Grammy Awards and other major honours.

Parton's influence extended well beyond entertainment. Her Imagination Library became one of her most important philanthropic projects. The programme has provided hundreds of millions of books to children around the world.

She also supported medical research, disaster relief and literacy programmes. Reuters reported that Parton sold about 100 million albums, wrote roughly 3,000 songs and achieved 25 No. 1 Billboard country hits during her career.
