Dolly Parton was reportedly left struggling to cope after the death of her husband, Carl Dean, with people close to the country music icon claiming she appeared 'lost' without the man she had loved for nearly six decades.

Dean died on 3 March 2025, aged 82, after his lasting marriage to Parton. In the months that followed, the singer spoke openly about the difficulty of adjusting to life without her lifelong partner, while sources claimed his death had taken a significant emotional and physical toll on her.

The renewed focus on Parton's grief follows her death at 80 on Tuesday, 25 August 2026. Her nephew Bryan Seaver announced the news in an emotional video, while her representatives said she had died following a brief battle with cancer.

Dolly Parton 'Lost' After Late Husband's Death

Dean's death reportedly 'knocked the wind right out of her', with an insider claiming Parton often appeared lost as she tried to carry on with her life. 'Carl was her rock. She depended on him more than people realised,' another source said.

The claims could not be independently verified, but Parton herself acknowledged how difficult the loss had been.

Speaking to Savannah Guthrie on TODAY in May 2025, she became emotional while discussing Dean and described adjusting to their changed routines as 'a big adjustment'. Adding that she would 'always miss him' and 'always love him'.

Sources also claimed friends noticed a change in the usually energetic singer after Dean's death, alleging she was 'not eating right' and had allowed aspects of her usual health routine to slip.

Parton later acknowledged the physical impact of her grief. In March 2026, she said she had become 'worn down and worn out' while grieving Dean and dealing with other difficulties, but was rebuilding herself spiritually, emotionally and physically.

While Parton became one of the world's biggest country music stars, Dean deliberately stayed away from the spotlight. Parton often described them as opposites, but credited their differences with helping their marriage endure.

'We're completely opposite, but that's what makes it fun,' she once said.

After Dean's death, Parton wrote on Instagram that they had spent '60 precious and meaningful years together', adding: 'Like all great love stories, they never end. They live on in memory and song.'

She later described their relationship as 'a great old love story' and called Dean her anchor, saying, 'Without Carl, I wouldn't be here.'

Parton died in Nashville on Tuesday, 17 months after Dean. She had been admitted to Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center in Nashville on 21 August, four days before her death.

Her family said a small, private service would be held for immediate relatives and encouraged fans wishing to honour her memory to support her Imagination Library.

Her death came after months of health difficulties that followed the loss of her husband, adding another chapter to the story of a couple whose relationship remained largely private despite Parton's extraordinary fame.
