Better Call Saul season 3
Jimmy in his Saul Goodman persona in Better Call Saul season 3 AMC

Saul Goodman has finally arrived! The moment that fans of the AMC drama have been waiting for was explained in Better Call Saul season 3 episode 6 as we finally know how Jimmy McGill (played by Bob Odenkirk) got his alter-ego name, Saul Goodman.

In the previous episode titled, Off Brand, a disciplinary hearing against his brother Chuck McGill resulted in Jimmy being suspended from practising law for one year. The penalty presented Jimmy with a dilemma as he had purchased local air time advertising his services, and now he can't air his ad because of his suspension.

Jimmy comes up with a scheme to advertise to sell the time. In a disguise accented by a black cap, sunglasses, and facial hair, Jimmy goes into hipster mode in a commercial where he appears as ad salesman Saul Goodman. "It's just a name," Jimmy tells Kim when she questions his Saul Goodman persona.

Is Jimmy close to becoming his alter-ego? Co-creator Peter Gould spoke to IndieWire about Jimmy's new persona. He explained, "I don't think we had a clue that Jimmy would start using the name Saul Goodman professionally this season, when we started. We just followed the logic of the situation — in Episode 5 and 6 Jimmy's legal license is suspended and we thought, okay, what are the implications of that?"

Gould continued, "I hate to say everything happens organically, but I will say also that we're just delighted when we see that option. Sometimes it seems too good to be true."

According to the co-creator, Saul is a mask that Jimmy puts on, which eventually takes over in Breaking Bad. He said, "I think what we've learned is that Saul is a mask that Jimmy dons. Bob talks about this sometimes — that if you wear a mask long enough, sometimes your face kind of molds itself to the mask."

The prequel series has focused on con-man-turned-attorney Jimmy McGill, a likable lawyer who often resorts to bending the rules of law. The show over the course of 3 seasons, has slowly inched closer to McGill's evolution into Saul Goodman, who was the legal protector of drug kingpin Walter White in Breaking Bad.
