It's no secret that Marvel fans love a cameo and a film that sees all of their favourite heroes come together. So when studio co-president Louis D'Esposito revealed a photo of newly appointed Spider-Man Tom Holland alongside director Scott Derrickson on the set of their upcoming film, Doctor Strange, the rumour mill went into overdrive.

D'Esposito took to his personal Twitter account to share a picture of the trio, tagging both Derrickson and 19-year-old Holland with their social media handles, causing comic book fans to immediately start speculating on the reasons why Holland was on the set.

Currently, absolutely nothing has been confirmed about Holland being involved in the project, but then weirder things have happened in the MCU. Perhaps it was just a friendly visit, or could it be that he really is going to cameo in the film as Peter Parker aka Spider-Man? One user wrote: "Interesting... very interesting," when he clocked the picture, whilst another thought more deeply about what Spider-Man could be doing in the movie if he was to appear.

A character who has not been adapted into the Marvel Cinematic Universe before, Doctor Strange tells the solo story of Dr Stephen Vincent Strange, a former neurosurgeon who loses his medical skills following a car crash. Benedict Cumberbatch is set to bring the titular character to life.

Desperate, he seeks out a powerful mystic, called the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton), who teaches him how to access his psychic and magical powers in a bid to enable him to stop evil doers, particularly her disgraced protégé Baron Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor). The film will be part of Phase 3 in the extensive line-up of future titles issued by Marvel and is slated for release on 4 November 2016.

Holland can currently be seen in US cinemas in Ron Howard's adventure drama In The Heart Of The Sea opposite Cillian Murphy, Brendan Gleeson and Chris Hemsworth. It will be released in the UK on 26 December. He will debut as Spider-Man in 2016's Captain America: Civil War, eventually starring in a solo movie about the same character in the near future.
