A Taiwanese influencer and her husband have renewed allegations that luxury belongings worth about $35,000 (£25,800) disappeared from their luggage while travelling with Emirates, claiming their attempts to resolve the dispute have gone unanswered for more than a year.

In an Instagram video, the couple said they entrusted their luggage to the airline during their journey but later discovered that their bags had allegedly been opened and searched, with valuables missing. They are now threatening legal action as they demand an explanation for how someone could have accessed the luggage.

The allegations have not been independently established, and there is no evidence identifying who, if anyone, removed the items.

Couple Says $35,000 Worth of Belongings Disappeared

The couple said the missing belongings were worth approximately $35,000 (£25,800), turning what might otherwise have been a routine baggage complaint into a significant financial dispute.

Their central concern, however, goes beyond the value of the allegedly missing possessions. In their video, they questioned how luggage handed over during air travel could have been accessed and searched without their knowledge.

'Stealing is stealing,' the text displayed in the video states, while the couple alleges the incident involved more than simply misplaced baggage.

Their account does not establish when or where the alleged interference occurred, an important distinction because checked baggage can pass through airports, security systems, ground-handling operations and other controlled areas during an international journey.

A Year Later, They Say They Still Have No Resolution

The couple's decision to publicise the dispute appears to have been driven largely by the amount of time they say has passed.

'We have waited a year,' the video states, alleging Emirates has neither properly responded to their concerns nor compensated them for the claimed losses.

The couple also said they were prepared to pursue legal action, arguing that the airline should be held responsible for luggage placed in its care.

Emirates' published conditions of carriage contain provisions covering baggage, claims and liability, although whether an airline is legally responsible for a particular loss depends on the circumstances surrounding the baggage and journey.

International Rules Cover Lost and Damaged Baggage

International air travel can fall under the Montreal Convention, which establishes rules governing airline liability for checked baggage on qualifying international journeys.

The treaty provides a framework under which carriers may be liable for destruction, loss or damage involving checked baggage when the relevant event occurs while the baggage is under the carrier's charge.

However, that does not automatically establish that Emirates is responsible for the couple's alleged loss. Questions surrounding evidence, reporting deadlines, the location of the alleged theft and applicable liability limits could all become relevant in determining a claim.

Who Accessed the Luggage?

The couple's allegations leave a crucial issue unresolved: who allegedly opened the luggage and at what stage of the journey?

Their video directs responsibility towards Emirates because the bags had been entrusted to the airline during travel, but it does not provide evidence identifying an individual responsible for the alleged theft.

For the couple, however, the lack of an explanation after what they describe as a year-long effort to obtain answers has become part of the dispute itself.

Their decision to take the allegations public now puts renewed attention on both the claimed $35,000 (£25,800) loss and the broader question they say remains unanswered: how their luggage was allegedly accessed in the first place.
