South Carolina Primary Results: Darline Graham Wins GOP Senate Nomination With Donald Trump's Backing

President Donald Trump secured an important political victory on Tuesday, 25 August, as the closely watched South Carolina primary results showed Darline Graham securing the Republican Senate nomination. She narrowly defeated US Representative Ralph Norman in a bitter special primary runoff.

The result followed a difficult stretch for the president's political operation. Trump-backed candidates have suffered losses in at least 10 primary races this year, including contests in Iowa, Georgia, Tennessee, Florida and Wyoming.

Graham's victory therefore provided the president with a high-profile win in a race in which he invested significant political capital.

From Placeholder to Trump's Handpicked Senator

To recall, Graham is the sister of the late Senator Lindsey Graham. Governor Henry McMaster appointed her to fill the remaining months of her brother's term after he died in July. Her appointment initially appeared likely to be a short-term role before the special election.

Trump, however, fundamentally changed the trajectory of her political career. He encouraged Graham to seek a full six-year term, later saying publicly, 'I asked her to do it. I got her into this whole thing.' She announced her candidacy shortly after being sworn into the Senate.

Her political profile has become closely linked to the president. This marks a notable contrast with her late brother, who made national security and foreign policy central to his Senate career.

Darline Graham entered the contest with little previous political experience but powerful Republican endorsements.

The final tally was close in a state accustomed to strong Republican performances. Graham captured about 52.5 per cent of the vote, while Norman trailed with about 47.5 per cent, according to unofficial results.

Trump Launches a Late Rescue Effort

Graham had struggled to consolidate Republican support during the initial 11 August primary. She finished first but received about one-third of the vote, forcing a runoff against Norman two weeks later.

When the race appeared increasingly competitive, the president personally intervened. He flew to Myrtle Beach to rally his supporters behind Graham. 'Pretend, please, that I'm on the ballot,' Trump told the Republican crowd on Friday.

Financial reinforcements quickly followed the president's visit. His aligned super PAC, MAGA Inc., spent more than $825,000 (£612,000) on get-out-the-vote calls and text messages supporting Graham.

The spending marked the first time this year Trump's political operation had deployed a substantial portion of its cash reserves in a primary contest.

The victory was particularly notable given Graham's limited political experience. During a recent televised debate with Norman, she struggled with a foreign policy question and admitted that she was 'not that informed on national security.'The remark drew criticism because foreign policy had been a defining issue for her late brother.

Norman, meanwhile, faced attacks over his previous endorsement of former Governor Nikki Haley during her 2024 presidential primary campaign against Trump. Graham's allies repeatedly highlighted that endorsement as they questioned Norman's loyalty to the president.

Ripple Effects Across the Nation

Norman addressed his supporters on Tuesday night after conceding the race. 'The president got involved. He has that right,' the congressman said. He then added, 'I never understood why he got in this race. But it is what it is, and I'll accept it.'

Meanwhile, Graham celebrated with supporters at her victory party. 'South Carolina is truly Trump country,' she declared. She specifically thanked the president, stating, 'Our victory would not have been possible without you, and we are truly grateful.'

Graham now advances to face Democratic nominee Annie Andrews this November. Andrews, a paediatrician, immediately challenged the Republican to at least three televised debates.

She argued that 'no appointment, endorsement, or family connection entitles anyone to six years.' Graham will enter the general election as the favourite in heavily Republican South Carolina.

The president also notched a secondary, albeit extremely narrow, victory in Oklahoma. Mike Mazzei won the Republican primary runoff for governor over state Attorney General Gentner Drummond.

That race served as another test of Trump's endorsement power in a strongly Republican state.

The primary also featured disagreement over a proposed $4 billion (£2.94 billion) aluminium smelter at the Tulsa Port of Inola. Trump supported the project, while Drummond had taken legal action challenging aspects of its development.

In Georgia, Democrat Everton Blair won a special election runoff to fill the remainder of the late Representative David Scott's term.

Blair defeated Scott's daughter, Marcye Scott, and will serve through 3 January 2027. Blair will become the first openly gay man elected to Congress from Georgia, marking a historic first for the state.

His tenure, however, will last only several months. Neither Blair nor Marcye Scott is running for the next full term, meaning Tuesday's result determined only who would complete David Scott's unfinished term.
