Who Is Umar Kremlev? Putin Ally Who Spent Hundreds of Thousands on Trump Jr.'s Wedding Celebrations

Russian businessman and International Boxing Association (IBA) president Umar Kremlev has drawn attention because of his reported role in funding celebrations following Donald Trump Jr.'s wedding weekend in the Bahamas. According to ProPublica, Kremlev paid for major elements of the lavish festivities, including the rental of a private island and a fireworks display.

Bettina Trump later publicly acknowledged Kremlev's role, describing the celebrations as an 'extraordinarily generous wedding gift from a friend.' Trump Jr.'s spokesperson also described Kremlev as a personal friend and did not dispute the reported payments.

Kremlev's business interests extend well beyond boxing, with reports linking him to Russia's betting industry and other businesses. His career has also brought him into contact with Russian officials, including Vladimir Putin.

How Umar Kremlev Rose Through Russia's Power Elite

According to Russian investigative outlet Proekt, Kremlev, 43, was born Umar Lutfulloyev and changed his surname to Kremlev in March 2010. It was also reported that he joined the Night Wolves, a prominent Russian motorcycle club, in the early 2010s.

Kremlev also developed a relationship with Alexei Rubezhnoi, who went on to hold a senior position in the Federal Protective Service (FSO), which is responsible for protecting Russia's top officials. Kremlev subsequently entered boxing administration, becoming secretary general of the Russian Boxing Federation in 2017.

The Boxing Boss With Kremlin Connections

Three years later, he reached the top of the international boxing administration. Kremlev was elected president of the International Boxing Association in 2020. Under his leadership, the organisation developed a financial relationship with Gazprom, the Russian state-controlled energy giant. The partnership, established in 2021, helped the IBA address its financial problems and get out of debt.

The IBA's growing links to Russian state interests became a major point of scrutiny during Kremlev's leadership. On 22 June 2023, the International Olympic Committee withdrew recognition of the IBA, citing continued concerns over governance, finances, and the organisation's failure to address corruption-related issues. Kremlev, however, remained defiant, continuing to promote the IBA and its international competitions.

Kremlev's Business Empire Goes Far Beyond Boxing

Reports also link Kremlev to Russia's sports-betting sector, including businesses connected to the country's betting and lottery infrastructure. It was reported that some of these interests expanded with backing from Russian state-linked structures.

His portfolio expanded further in 2024 when he became the owner of Rolf, one of Russia's biggest car dealership groups. Rolf was placed under temporary state management in late 2023 under a decree signed by Putin before its assets were subsequently transferred to the state. Rolf reported 323.8B rubles, roughly $3.63B, in 2023 revenue. The group was later acquired by a company structure linked to Kremlev for 34.8B rubles, according to Rolf's financial reporting.

The deals have cemented Kremlev's status as a major Russian businessman. His exact personal net worth, however, remains unclear, with no authoritative Forbes-style estimate available.

Kremlev's Ties to Putin

Kremlev has maintained a public relationship with Putin, including appearances alongside the Russian president at sporting events. His political proximity has made him a controversial figure in international sport since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

On 22 April 2026, Putin presented Kremlev with the Order of Friendship, a Russian state honour. Kremlev also travelled to China around the time of Putin's visit. His press office said he was not part of the president's official delegation. Ukraine has imposed sanctions on Kremlev, citing his ties to Putin and Russian security agencies.

From New Friendship to Lavish Celebrations

Kremlev's relationship with Trump Jr. appears to have developed only in recent years. Trump Jr.'s spokesperson said the two met through a mutual friend in the hunting world and bonded over boxing and the outdoors. They were later seen together at an IBA event in Istanbul in September 2025. Reportedly, Kremlev paid about $100,000 to rent a private island and roughly $70,000 for fireworks at the Bahamas celebrations following Trump Jr.'s wedding.

National security experts questioned what Kremlev hoped to gain from funding the celebrations. Retired FBI counterintelligence official Frank Montoya Jr. warned that such financial support could create an expectation of reciprocity. 'If I'm paying for your wedding, at some point, you're going to owe me something,' Montoya said. He added that while it was unclear whether Kremlev was acting in coordination with the Russian government, the arrangement was 'unthinkable for the son of the president.'

Meanwhile, Bettina Trump defended Kremlev's wedding gift, saying, 'Friendship does not require a political motive.' The couple rejected suggestions that the celebrations had a political agenda.
