There is just over a month to go before votes are cast in the United States to select a new president, bringing an end to months of campaign announcements, speeches and debates.

On 8 November, more than 100 million Americans will go to the polls to decide the future of the US and elect not only a head-of-state, but also the commander of the largest military in the world.

The estimated opening and closing times for the election are listed below, based on preliminary information released by local and state governments.

All times listed below are in local time – be aware that some states span multiple time zones.

Alabama: Polling starts at 7am and ends 7pm.

Alaska: Polling starts at 7am and ends 8pm. The state is divided between the Alaska time zone and the Hawaii-Aleutian time zone.

Arizona: Polling starts at 6am and ends at 7pm.

Arkansas: Polling starts at 7.30am and ends at 7.30pm.

California: Polling starts at 7am and ends at 8pm.

Colorado: Polling starts at 7am and ends at 7pm.

Connecticut: Polling starts at 6am and ends at 8pm.

Delaware: Polling starts at 7am and ends at 8pm.

Florida: Polling starts at 7am and ends at 7pm.

Georgia: Polling starts at 7am and ends at 7pm. The cities with a population of 300,000 or more, polling stations will stay open until 8pm.

Hawaii: Polling starts at 7am and ends at 6pm.

Idaho: Polling starts at 8am and ends at 8pm. Some polling stations across the state may open at 7am.

Illinois: Polling starts at 6am and ends at 7pm.

Indiana: Polling starts at 6am and ends at 6pm.

Iowa: Polling starts at 7am and ends at 9pm.

Kansas: Polling starts at 7am and ends at 7pm.

Kentucky: Polling starts at 6am and ends at 6pm.

Louisiana: Polling starts at 6am and ends at 8pm.

Maine: Polling starts at 6am and ends at 8pm. Some voting places may open between 6am and 10am, depending on the population of the town.

Maryland: Polling starts at 7am and ends at 8pm.

Massachusetts: Polling starts at 7am and ends at 8pm. Some polling places may open as early at 5.45am.

Michigan: Polling starts at 7am and ends at 8pm.

Minnesota: Polling starts at 7am and ends at 8pm, but some polling places may remain open until 10pm - so check with local officials.

Mississippi: Polling starts at 7am and ends at 7pm.

Missouri: Polling starts at 6am and ends at 7pm.

Montana: Polling starts at 7am and ends at 8pm. Areas with smaller populations may open their polling stations later on.

Nebraska: Polling starts at 8am and ends at 8pm in the central time zone. In the mountain time zone, polling starts at 7am and ends at 7pm.

Nevada: Polling starts at 7am and ends at 7pm.

New Hampshire: Polling starts between 6am and 11am and ends at 7pm.

New Jersey: Polling starts at 6am and ends at 8pm.

New Mexico: Polling starts at 7am and ends at 7pm.

New York: Polling starts at 6am and ends at 9pm.

North Carolina: Polling starts at 6.30am and ends at 7.30pm.

North Dakota: Polling starts between 7am and 9am and ends between 7pm and 9pm.

Ohio: Polling starts at 6.30am and ends at 7.30pm.

Oklahoma: Polling starts at 7am and ends at 7pm.

Oregon: There are no polling hours because it is a vote-by-mail state. People can vote on election day, but all ballots must be received by 8pm.

Pennsylvania: Polling starts at 7am and ends at 8pm.

Rhode Island: Polling starts at 7am and ends at 8pm.

South Carolina: Polling starts at 7am and ends at 7pm.

South Dakota: Polling starts at 7am and ends at 7pm.

Tennessee: Polling hours depend on the county and will be released 15 days before voting day.

Texas: Polling starts at 7am and ends at 7pm.

Utah: Polling starts at 7am and ends at 8pm.

Vermont: Polling starts between 5am and 10am and ends at 7pm.

Virginia: Polling starts at 6am and ends at 7pm.

Washington: There are no polling hours because it is a vote-by-mail state. All ballots must be received by 8pm on election day.

Washington DC: Polling starts at 7am and ends at 8pm.

West Virginia: Polling starts at 6.30am and ends at 7.30pm.

Wisconsin: Polling starts at 7am and ends at 8pm.

Wyoming: Polling starts at 7am and ends at 7pm.
