Amazon has begun a new round of automatic settlement payments to eligible Prime customers AFP News

Amazon Prime customers could have money heading their way without filling out a single form as a newly expanded round of settlement refunds gets under way.

The Amazon FTC settlement payouts were expanded after a federal court approved changes to the $2.5 billion (£1.89 billion) settlement between Amazon and the US Federal Trade Commission. Millions of additional customers became eligible for automatic payments starting 1 October 2026, while the maximum total refund available under the programme has risen from $51 to $200 (£38.61 to £151.43).

Who Is Eligible for Amazon FTC Settlement Payouts?

The expanded refunds do not apply to every Amazon Prime subscriber.

According to the FTC, customers must be in the US and must have enrolled in Prime through one of the challenged enrolment flows, or tried unsuccessfully to cancel through Amazon's online cancellation process, between 23 June 2019 and 23 June 2025.

Eligible customers must also have used no more than 20 Prime benefits during any 12-month period after enrolling. These benefits can include services such as Prime Video or Prime Music offered free to subscribers.

The original settlement provided refunds of up to $51 to certain customers. Under the revised order, millions of additional consumers who used between 11 and 20 Prime benefits during a one-year period are now eligible for automatic refunds. Payments to this newly included group were scheduled to begin on 1 October.

Do Amazon Prime Customers Need To File a Claim?

For the new payments, no claim is required.

The FTC said all future payments under the revised order will be distributed automatically, meaning eligible customers do not need to respond to a notice, submit a claim or complete additional paperwork with Amazon.

Amazon is responsible for administering the settlement payment programme. The FTC has also warned consumers that it is not contacting people about Amazon refunds and that Amazon will never require customers to pay money to receive one.

How Will Amazon Settlement Payments Arrive?

Eligible Prime customers could receive their Amazon settlement refund through PayPal, Venmo or a mailed cheque.

The FTC says payments expire 60 days after they are issued, meaning recipients should accept or cash their refund within that period. Customers who qualify are expected to receive their refunds by April 2027.

How Much Could Eligible Amazon Customers Receive?

The revised order raises the maximum total payment from $51 to $200 per eligible consumer.

If consumer-accepted payments fail to reach a required threshold by February 2027, Amazon will make another round of automatic payments to consumers who previously received and accepted refunds. Those customers could receive up to an additional $149 (£112), bringing their total settlement payout to as much as $200.

That supplemental payment round is due to begin by the end of April 2027.

Why Is Amazon Paying Prime Customers?

The refunds stem from a September 2025 settlement resolving FTC allegations over Amazon's Prime subscription practices.

The regulator alleged that Amazon enrolled millions of consumers in Prime without their consent and made the subscription deliberately difficult to cancel. Amazon agreed to pay a $1 billion (approximately £757 million) civil penalty and provide up to $1.5 billion (£1.14 billion) in consumer redress under the settlement.

By September 2026, Amazon had already issued more than $845 million (£639.83 million) in refunds to eligible Prime customers, according to the FTC. The revised order now expands the pool of consumers who can receive money and extends automatic payments through April 2027.
