For centuries, the Maya rainforest was treated as a place where ancient ruins could be found only by cutting through thick vegetation and painstakingly exploring the ground.

Then one graduate student opened an old digital survey buried deep in a Google search and discovered something extraordinary: an entire Maya city had been sitting beneath the trees in southern Mexico, containing roughly 6,500 structures and evidence of a population that may once have reached 50,000 people.

Student Found Valeriana in an Old Environmental Survey

The discovery began with Luke Auld-Thomas, then a PhD candidate at Tulane University, who was searching through publicly available data while researching Maya settlements.

According to the podcast, Auld-Thomas found the relevant survey around page 16 of a Google search. The data was roughly a decade old and had originally been collected for environmental purposes, including research into forest carbon.

The survey used LIDAR, short for light detection and ranging. The technology sends thousands of laser pulses from an aircraft towards the ground. Some pulses bounce off leaves and branches, while others pass through gaps in the canopy and reach the forest floor.

LIDAR Revealed a Huge Maya Capital Beneath the Trees

In Campeche, Mexico, the survey revealed pyramids, enclosed plazas, large buildings and a broad causeway connecting different parts of the settlement. Researchers also identified a ball court and a reservoir created by damming a seasonal watercourse.

The collection of features suggested that this was not simply an isolated Maya village. It was a major urban Centre. Researchers named the site Valeriana, after a nearby lagoon.

The scale was astonishing. Research published in the journal Antiquity in 2024 identified approximately 6,500 structures, with the settlement believed to have reached its height between roughly AD 740 and 850.

Population estimates suggested that between 30,000 and 50,000 people may have lived there at its peak. Perhaps most remarkable was its location. Valeriana was reportedly only about 15 minutes from a major road.

For generations, people had travelled through the surrounding region without realising that a substantial ancient city was concealed beneath the vegetation.

Maya Cities Were Far Larger Than Archaeologists Once Thought

For decades, researchers studying the Maya lowlands relied heavily on ground surveys. Archaeologists had to walk through dense jungle, clearing vegetation and mapping structures one area at a time.

The rainforest often appeared largely empty between known archaeological sites. LIDAR has dramatically changed that view. When researchers began scanning large areas of Guatemala and Mexico, they found extensive networks of homes, palaces, terraces, reservoirs, defensive structures and raised roads.

Some causeways stretched for kilometres and connected settlements that had previously appeared separate. Even Tikal, one of the best-known Maya cities, was revealed to be significantly larger than earlier estimates suggested.

The discoveries indicate that Maya civilisation was considerably more urbanised and interconnected than traditional maps once showed.

Valeriana therefore matters not simply because another ancient city has been found, but because it adds further evidence to a changing understanding of how millions of people may have lived across the Maya world.

As the podcast put it, 'The technology tells you where to dig. It never tells you what you will find.'

Somewhere in another forgotten archive, there may already be another answer waiting. The data could have been collected years ago, paid for and stored on a server, with nobody yet realising that an ancient world is sitting inside it.
