Production on 'The Batman Part II' has been temporarily paused while director Matt Reeves attends to a family matter, DC Studios said in a statement provided to Deadline on 5 October. The interruption follows several changes to the sequel's release timetable.

Filming began in London in June, with Robert Pattinson returning as Bruce Wayne/Batman and Reeves serving as director and co-writer. The film is currently listed for release on 18 February 2028, although Deadline reported that it was too early to determine whether the pause would affect that date.

DC Studios Confirms Temporary Pause

'Production on "The Batman Part II" has been temporarily paused while Matt Reeves focuses on a family matter,' a DC Studios spokesperson said. 'Matt has the full support of DC Studios and we look forward to continuing the journey soon.'

The Hollywood Reporter separately confirmed the pause through sources. The statement did not disclose further information about the family matter or provide a date for filming to resume.

The announcement concerns an interruption to a production already underway. It did not announce a replacement director or a revised release date.

That distinction matters because the sequel's earlier delays involved its development and release schedule. They do not, by themselves, establish that filming had previously been halted.

Sequel Has Changed Release Dates

'The Batman Part II' was initially scheduled to open on 3 October 2025. It subsequently moved to 2 October 2026, then 1 October 2027, before being placed on the current February 2028 schedule.

The lengthy preparation period included script development, with trade reporting identifying work on the screenplay as part of the project's changing timetable. The individual postponements should not all be attributed to the same cause.

Reeves marked the start of filming on social media on 12 June 2026, sharing a photograph of the production slate with the hashtag '#FirstShot'. The Hollywood Reporter's latest account confirms that filming began in London that month.

The October pause therefore comes several months after cameras began rolling, rather than before the start of principal photography. Its effect on the remaining production schedule has not been established in the reports announcing the interruption.

The studios' statement offers no revised timetable. The current release date remains the one listed in the latest trade coverage, rather than a newly confirmed date issued after the pause.

Pattinson Leads Returning and New Cast

Pattinson returns as Batman, alongside Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth and Colin Farrell as the Penguin. Jayme Lawson is also listed among the sequel's cast.

Reeves confirmed additions including Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Brian Tyree Henry, Charles Dance and Sebastian Koch in May. Their casting expands the ensemble around Pattinson's version of Gotham, although the announcements did not specify every character.

Trade reports have linked Stan to Harvey Dent. That role was not specified in the casting announcements reviewed, so it should be distinguished from Reeves's confirmation that Stan had joined the film.

The sequel continues the standalone storyline introduced in 'The Batman' in 2022. That film presented Pattinson's younger Bruce Wayne investigating a series of murders and corruption in Gotham, with Reeves directing and co-writing the crime thriller.

For the sequel, the confirmed development is the temporary production pause and the studio's support for Reeves. Further details about the restart and any resulting scheduling changes have not been announced in the statement.
