Big Camera Changes Coming to iPhone 17 Pro: Leaks Hint at Next-Level Features
Expect a notable boost in front camera performance too, promising clearer selfies and video calls

Get ready for a significant leap in mobile photography. The upcoming iPhone 17 Pro is rumoured to introduce ground-breaking camera technology, promising users an unprecedented imaging experience as leaks suggest a suite of next-level features that could redefine what's possible with a smartphone camera.
Apple's iPhone 17 lineup is still months away from its official unveiling, yet early information has generated considerable excitement.
A recent report indicates that the forthcoming iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max models are expected to feature significant camera enhancements.
The Telephoto Transformation
These enhancements further elevate Apple's already strong presence in the high-end smartphone market, a segment where their devices are widely acclaimed for their exceptional photography and video capabilities.
The word on the street is that the iPhone 17 series will house a radically overhauled telephoto camera. While Apple introduced a 48-megapixel primary camera with the iPhone 14 Pro and later enhanced the ultra-wide lens to 48-megapixel with the iPhone 16 Pro, the focus now shifts to further improving the telephoto capabilities, per MacRumors.

Now, the company is reportedly aiming to boost the telephoto sensor's resolution to 48-megapixel for the iPhone 17 Pro models. Should this materialise, all three rear cameras will boast a 48-megapixel resolution.
This development could provide sharper images, enhance zoom performance, and enable the capture of more detailed photos from greater distances. However, whether Apple plans to modify the current 5x zoom interface within the Camera app is still unclear.
Dual-Lens Video on the Horizon
According to 9To5Mac, multi-camera video recording is the second significant feature being discussed. While this functionality has long been accessible through third-party applications, Apple's Camera app has never been offered natively.
However, that could change this year, as the iPhone 17 Pro series is anticipated to introduce this functionality officially. This would empower users to capture video using multiple lenses concurrently, for instance, recording simultaneously with ultra-wide and telephoto cameras, offering creators greater creative freedom.
It's not yet clear if this feature will require any specific hardware upgrades, but it appears Apple intends to keep it exclusive to the newer Pro models for now.
A Sharper Front-Facing Future
Shifting the focus to the front camera, Apple is reportedly planning to double the resolution of its TrueDepth selfie camera from 12-megapixel to 24-megapixel. This significant improvement is not just for the Pro models. Still, it is also expected to extend to the standard iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air, promising enhanced selfie and video call quality for all users.
Earlier reports suggest this upgrade will improve selfies and video calls, particularly in challenging low-light conditions. As the front camera setup has mainly remained consistent over the last few years, this would mark a welcome and substantial refresh.
Redesigned Camera Module
Beyond technical improvements, Apple is also reportedly redesigning the rear camera module. The current configuration, often referred to by many users as a camera 'bump,' might be replaced with a new arrangement that spans the entire phone width, resembling a camera bar or 'island.'

In other words, Apple could reposition the flash and other components for improved alignment. With this design shift, the Cupertino-based tech giant could be prepping to accommodate the enhanced camera sensors. Alternatively, the company may aim to manage the device's internal layout more effectively.
Pro Models Lead the Way
These modifications highlight Apple's continued strong emphasis on the camera capabilities of its Pro models. While the iPhone 17 Air may appeal to users seeking a lighter, thinner device with a competent camera system, those prioritising top-tier photography features will likely find the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max more appealing.
The Tim Cook-led company could unveil the much-awaited iPhone 16 series successors in September, provided it doesn't deviate from its established release calendar. However, there are suggestions that this could be the final instance of the company adhering to this consistent pattern for its standard model introductions, with modifications likely to occur from 2026 onwards.
It is worth noting that Apple has neither confirmed nor denied these speculations yet. However, if these reports prove accurate, the iPhone 17 Pro could deliver some of the most substantial camera improvements seen in recent years.
